Shift Cable: Adjustments

Gear selector cable, adjusting

Adjustment

Preparing for adjustment

There are two different types of cable sleeve: one 9 mm and one 7 mm.

Note! 9 mm cable sleeve was discontinued from production in week 38 1998.

Measure the dimension with calipers.
Lift up the catch using a screwdriver. The catch must be left in place.
Move the gear selector to position P.
Move the gear lever on the transmission to position P (move the lever down towards the steering gear).
Push the car until P position engages.

Adjustment

Adjusting cables with 9mm sleeves:

Note! It is extremely important that the cable is adjusted according to the instructions below. There are only a few millimeters available to dispose of the axial play in the gear selector assembly and cable.

Pull the cable into the adjuster a few millimeters. Hold the cable in place. Lock the cable. Press the catch down.

Cable with 7mm sleeve:
Only press the yellow catch into place. The cable is then in the correct position.

Checking the position of the gear selector lever

Pull the gear selector lever downwards as far as possible. The force of the springs will make the lever jump to the left (the black shaded circle).
Move the gear selector lever to the right (large arrow). Check whether the gear selector lever moves further in the upper cut-out for the gear selector assembly (the circle) when the gear selector lever is moved sideways.

Check the shifting in manual position

Turn on the ignition.
Read off from the dashboard (see the arrow) Shift upwards (+). The indicator must then display 1, 2 or 3. The indicator must return to 1 after downshifting (-).
The adjustment was carried out correctly if this functions correctly.
If the indicator displays D, repeat the adjustment. See Adjustment.
