Note! Make sure that the front wheels are in the straight ahead position. In addition, lock the steering wheel with the steering column lock when the tie rod and steering column universal joint are removed. This must be done to prevent the SRS contact roller from reaching its end position.
Note! Raise the car by the front of the sills so that the subframe's rear mounting points become accessible and can be removed.
Removing the steering gear

Lift the engine slightly so take the weight off the engine mountings.
Remove
- the front wheels.
- the tie rod ends from the tie rods. Use puller 999 5259 SEPARATOR 999 5259 Separator.
Measure on one side the length of the tie rod in relation to the steering gear housing.
Note the length.
Remove the bracket and clamps for the oil pipes at front and rear edges.
Remove the collision guard over the steering gear (2 bolts).
(Applicable to RHD cars only.)
Place a receptacle under the steering gear.
Detach the oil pipes from the steering gear. Pull the pipes forwards so that they will clear the collision guard when the frame is lowered.
(Applicable to RHD cars only.)
Remove the five nuts securing the steering gear to the subframe.
Remove the plastic nut securing the lug in the RH fender liner and bend the lug aside.
Remove the RH engine mounting retaining bolts
Position an engine lift at the rear of the subframe.
Remove
- on both sides the four bolts securing the subframe brackets to the body.
- the two bolts together with the brackets and washers.
Remove the subframe's front bolts 10-15 mm .
Lower the subframe at the rear. Make sure that the steering gear bolts come away from the frame.
Remove the engine lift.
Place an oil receptacle under the steering gear and detach the oil pipes from the steering gear. (Applicable to LHD cars only.)
Remove
- the retaining bolt for the steering column universal joint. Then press the universal joint up and away from the steering gear.
- the bolt securing the steering gear to the rear engine mounting.
RHD cars: Lift out the steering gear to the right.
LHD cars: Lift out the steering gear to the left.
Fitting the steering gear
Note! When changing the steering gear and the bracket for the middle attachment point: Do not tighten the bracket retaining bolt just yet.
LHD and RHD cars
Transfer the heat shield.
Transfer the bracket for the middle attachment point.
Fit protective plugs in the pipe couplings.
Check that the tie rod is in the same position as when removed.
RHD cars: Lift the steering gear into place from the right.
LHD cars: Lift the steering gear into place from the left.
Let the steering gear rest on the subframe and fit the heat shield. (Applicable to RHD cars only.)
Suspend the steering gear from the rear engine mounting.
Hold up the steering gear so that it hangs straight in relation to the frame. Tighten the engine mounting bolt to 50 Nm.
Align and attach the steering gear to the steering column universal joint.
Fit a new locknut on the steering column universal joint. Tighten to 20 Nm .
Fit the locking eyebolt.
Attach the oil pipes loosely to the steering gear. (Applicable only to LHD cars.) Use new O-rings .
Fit the front bracket for the oil pipes (loosely).
Line up the pipes with the bracket on the steering gear. Tighten the oil pipes in the steering gear to 25 Nm .
Press the subframe up at the rear. Use an engine lift. Fit the steering gear retaining bolts in the frame at the same time.
Fit new bolts loosely in the subframe.
Move the engine lift over to the front of the frame and change the frame's front retaining bolts. Do not tighten just yet.
First tighten the bolts on the LH side of the subframe to 105 Nm and then angle tighten 120° .
Now tighten the bolts on the RH side by the same amount as on the LH side.
Finally, tighten the bracket retaining bolts on both sides to 50 Nm .
Tighten
- the steering gear to 50 Nm . Use new nuts .
- the bolt securing the steering gear's middle attachment point to 80 Nm .
Fit (applicable to RHD cars only)
- the oil pipes with new O-rings .
- the front and rear pipe brackets loosely.
Tighten the oil pipes in the steering gear to 25 Nm .
Fit and tighten the oil pipe brackets and clamps at front and rear.
Fit the collision guard over the steering gear. (Applicable only to RHD cars.) Tighten to 80 Nm .
Fit new bolts in the RH engine mounting. Tighten to 35 Nm and angle tighten 90° .
Bend back the lug in the fender liner and fit the plastic nut.
Fit
- the tie rods to the steering arms. Use new nuts. Tighten to 70 Nm .
- the wheels.
Lubricate the hub guide for the wheel with rust inhibitor, part number 1161030-0 .
Fit the bolts and tighten loosely. Then tighten in crosswise sequence to 110 Nm .

Fill the servo reservoir with oil and bleed the system.
Oil grade, see specification Steering .
Turn the steering wheel from lock to lock repeatedly. Top off with oil as necessary.
Lower the car.
Apply the parking brake. Start the engine.
Check the oil level while bleeding the system as described below.
A. Turn the steering wheel slowly to the right, hold it at full lock for 10 seconds.
B. Turn the steering wheel slowly to the left, hold it at full lock for 10 seconds
Repeat steps A and B 20 times. Move the car after 10 times to avoid damaging the tires.
Check toe-in. Toe-in .
