Rear Final Drive
Rear Final Drive
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Torque Wrench (5-50 Nm) (V.A.G 1331)
• Torque Wrench (40-200 Nm) (V.A.G 1332)
Removing
• A second technician will be needed to remove and install the rear final drive.
- Lift the vehicle.
- Remove the underbody trim from under the rear final drive, if equipped.
- Remove the rear section of the exhaust system.
- Remove the center support bolts - 1 -. The bracket is not removed.
- Mark the installed position of the driveshaft to the rear final drive - arrow -.
• The driveshaft is removed only from the rear final drive.
- Remove the driveshaft with a pry bar - A - from the rear final drive. Push the driveshaft forward until the flange is free.
- Remove the right and left drive axle flanges from the final drive using a pry bar - A -.
- Remove the drive axle on one side.
- Plug the openings for the drive axle flange with a plug.
- Remove the nuts - arrows -. Do not remove the bolts yet.
- Remove the bolts form the subframe together with a second technician - arrows - while holding the subframe in its installed position.
- Guide the final drive out of the driveshaft flange and remove the final drive downward.
Installing
Installation is performed in the reverse order of removal while observing the following:
Always replace the circlip on the final drive pin.
- Attach the driveshaft to the final drive flange so that the colored mark, applied at the factory, aligns with the colored mark that was made earlier - arrow -.
- Attach the rear final drive to the subframe.
- Further installation is performed in reverse order of removal.
- Check the rear final drive gear oil level. Refer to => [ Rear Final Drive Gear Oil Level, Checking ] Rear Final Drive Gear Oil Level, Checking.
