Power Steering Gear
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Hose Clamp (3094)
• Torque Wrench (V.A.G 1332)
• Ball Joint Puller (T10187)
• Vehicle Diagnostic Tester (VAS 5051B)
• Box End Wrench Insert (V.A.G 1923)
Removing
Vehicles with an Air Spring Shock Absorber
- Activate the vehicle lift mode and place the vehicle on the lifting platform. Refer to => [ Vehicle Lift Mode ] Description and Operation.
Continuation for All Vehicles
- Remove the noise insulation.
- Loosen the wheel bolts.
- Raise the vehicle.
- Remove wheels.
- Clamp off the suction hose at the power steering fluid reservoir - 2 -.

- Remove the noise insulation.
- Clamp off the return line.

- Loosen nut of track rod ball joint, but do not unscrew yet.
To protect thread, screw nut on pin a few turns.
- Remove the tie rod end from the wheel bearing housing and remove the nut.

- Remove the left tie rod from the steering gear.

- If present, remove the bolts - arrows -.
- Remove the heat shield - 1 - from the steering gear - 2 -.
- Turn the steering gear to the right to the stop.
- Remove the bolt - arrow - of the universal joint - 1 -.
- Remove the universal joint - 1 - from the power steering gear - 2 -.
- Release and disconnect the harness connector - 1 - from the servotronic solenoid valve (N119).
- Remove the brackets for the hydraulic lines - 1 -.
- Remove the pressure line and return line - 2 - from the steering gear.
- Unscrew the threaded connection - arrows - from the heat shield - 1 -.
- Remove heat shield.
- Unscrew the threaded connection - arrows - from the steering gear.
- Slide steering gear to right side of vehicle - direction of arrow 1 -.
- Move the steering gear downward on the left side.
- Remove steering gear downward toward left side of vehicle - direction of arrow 2 -.
Installing
Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following:
- Bleed steering system. Refer to => [ Power Steering System, Bleeding ] Service and Repair.
- Check the steering system for leaks. Refer to => [ Steering System, Checking for Leaks ] Testing and Inspection.
- Check the hydraulic fluid level and fill if necessary.
- Install wheels and tighten. Refer to => [ Wheel Bolt Torque Specification ] [1][2]Specifications.
- After installation, a vehicle alignment must be performed. Refer to => [ Wheel Alignment ] Wheel Alignment.
- Perform basic setting for steering angle sensor (G85).
Use the (VAS 5051B).
