Glow Plug: Service and Repair
Glow Plugs
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Hinged Socket (3220)
• Socket Insert AF 12 for Glow Plugs (VAS 6454)
Removing
- Turn off the ignition.
- Remove the engine cover. Refer to => [ Engine Cover ] Engine Cover.
• For cylinders 3 and 6, the intake manifold flap motor must be removed.
• On cylinders 2 and 5, a combustion chamber pressure sensor is integrated in the glow plug.
• Electrical component list term: glow plug 2 (Q11) with cylinder 2 combustion chamber pressure sensor (G678).
• Electrical component list term: glow plug 5 (Q14) with cylinder 5 combustion chamber pressure sensor (G681).
Glow Plug Versions
1 Glow plug with a combustion chamber pressure sensor (only installed in cylinders 2 and 5).
2 Glow plug without a combustion chamber pressure sensor
- Disconnect the glow plug connectors from the glow plugs.
- Clean the glow plug channel in the cylinder head (there must not be any debris in the cylinder).
• Example for cleaning:
• Extract large contaminants with a vacuum cleaner.
• Then clean the glow plug channel with a cloth dampened with oil.
- Use the hinged socket (3220) to loosen the glow plugs for cylinders "1, 3, 4 and 6".
- Use the socket insert AF 12 for glow plugs (VAS 6454) to loosen the glow plugs for cylinders "2 and 5".
- Then carefully remove the glow plug by hand or with a hose and without bending it.
Installing
- Carefully install the glow plugs by hand or with a hose and without bending it.
- Use the hinged socket (3220) or the socket insert AF 12 for glow plugs (VAS 6454) with a suitable torque wrench to tighten the glow plugs.
• Glow plug tightening specification: 17 Nm
- Connect the glow plug connectors to the corresponding glow plugs and make sure the connectors are secure.
Further installation is performed in the reverse order.
