Upper Oil Pan
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Hand Drill with Plastic Brush Attachment
• Silicone Adhesive Sealant (D 176 501 A1)
• Protective Eyewear
Removing
- Remove the engine. Refer to => [ Engine, Removing ] Engine, Removing.
- Separate the engine and transmission. Refer to => [ Engine, Removing from the ] Engine, Removing from the Scissor Lift Table (VAS 6131).
- Secure the engine to the assembly stand. Refer to => [ Engine, Securing to the ] Engine, Securing to the Engine and Transmission Holder (VAS 6095).
- Remove the drive plate. Refer to => [ Drive Plate ] Drive Plate.
- Remove the shim behind it.
- Remove the timing chain covers. Refer to => [ Timing Chain Covers ] Timing Chain Covers.
- Remove the oil pump and balance shaft timing chain. Refer to => [ Balance Shaft and Oil Pump Chain ] Balance Shaft and Oil Pump Chain.
- Remove the belt pulley side sealing flange. Refer to => [ Front Sealing Flange ] Service and Repair.
- Remove the lower oil pan. Refer to => [ Lower Oil Pan ] Lower Oil Pan.
- Remove the oil pump. Refer to => [ Oil Pump ] Oil Pump.
- Remove the upper oil pan bolts - 1 through 4 -.
- Pry the upper oil pan from the alignment pins in the cylinder block.
Installing
• Replace gaskets, seals and O-rings.
- Remove any sealant from the grooves in the upper oil pan and from the sealing surfaces.
Wear protective eyewear.
- Remove any sealant residue from the pan using a rotating brush, for example, using a hand drill with a plastic brush attachment (wear eye protection).
- Clean the sealing surfaces so they are completely free of any oil or grease.
- Cut the sealant tube nozzle at the front mark (nozzle diameter: approximately 0.12 in).
- Insert the seals - 1 and 2 - in the upper oil pan.
- Apply the beads of sealant - arrows - to the clean sealing surface on the upper oil pan as illustrated.
• The grooves - arrows - in the sealing surfaces must be completely filled with sealant.
• The sealant beads must be 1.5 to 2.0 mm above the sealing surface.
• The sealant bead must not be thicker than specified, otherwise the sealant could enter the oil pan and clog the oil pump strainer.
• The upper oil pan must be installed within 5 minutes after application of the sealant.
- Position the upper oil pan in place and tighten the bolts - 1 through 4 - to 5 Nm in a diagonal sequence.
- Tighten the bolts - 1 through 4 - in a diagonal sequence.
Further installation is in the reverse order of removal.
