Coolant Thermostat
• Checking the coolant thermostat => [ (Item 17) Coolant Thermostat ] Coolant Pump and Thermostat Overview.
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Refractometer (T10007)
• Drip Tray (V.A.G 1306)
• Torque Wrench (5-50 Nm) (V.A.G 1331)
• Spring Type Clip Pliers (VAS 5024 A)
Removing
Hot steam may escape when opening the expansion tank cap.
• Wear protective goggles and protective clothing to prevent damage to eyes and scalding.
• Cover the cap with a cloth and open very carefully.
- Drain the coolant. Refer to => [ Draining and Filling ] Service and Repair.
- Remove the air filter (engine cover). Refer to => [ Air Filter and Engine Cover ] Air Filter and Engine Cover.
- Remove the intake hose - 4 - between the throttle valve control module (J338) and air filter. To do so, disconnect the hose - 1 -, if present, and the hose - 2 - (compress the securing ring) and remove the spring clamp - 3 -.
- Remove the intake manifold. Refer to => [ Intake Manifold ] Intake Manifold.
- Insert the guide tube for the oil dipstick into the cylinder block again and secure it tightly so that no escaping coolant can run into the engine.
- Place a suitable container under the coolant thermostat housing to catch coolant flowing out.
- Remove the bolts - arrows -, the cover - A - and remove the thermostat.
Installing
Installation is performed in the reverse order of removal. When doing this note the following:
• Replace the seal => [ (Item 18) Seal ] Coolant Pump and Thermostat Overview and O-ring => [ (Item 16) O-ring ] Coolant Pump and Thermostat Overview.
• Note the installed position of the thermostat - 1 -. The valve - 2 - must point upward.
• Fill the coolant. Refer to => [ Draining and Filling ] Service and Repair.
