Wheel Bearing Housing
Wheel Bearing Housing
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Ball joint puller (3287A)
• Spreader (3424)
• Ball Joint Puller (T10187)
• Torque wrench (V.A.G 1332)
• Engine/transmission jack (V.A.G 1383 A)
• Angle wrench (V.A.G 1756)
Perform The Following:
Removing
- Remove the driveshaft bolt => [ Threaded Connection Between Driveshaft and Wheel Hub, Loosening and Tightening ] Procedures.
The wheel bearing must not be under a load while the driveshaft threaded connection on the wheel side is loose.
If the wheel bearings are under the load of the vehicle weight, the wheel bearing will be damaged. This reduces the service life of the wheel bearings.
The driveshaft bolt may be loosened maximum 90° when the vehicle is standing on its wheels.
Vehicles without a driveshaft must not be moved, otherwise the wheel bearing will be damaged. If a vehicle must be moved, be sure to note the following:
• Install an outer joint in place of the driveshaft.
• Tighten the outer joint to 120 Nm.
- Loosen the wheel bolts.
- Raise the vehicle.
- Remove the wheel.
- Remove the brake caliper and secure it to the body using wire.
- Disconnect the connector - 1 - from the ABS speed sensor.
- Remove the bolt - arrow - and the ABS speed sensor - 1 -.
- Remove the brake rotor - 1 - - arrow -.
- Remove the cover plate - 1 - from the wheel bearing housing - arrow -.
- Loosen nut of track rod ball joint, but do not unscrew yet.
To protect thread, screw nut on pin a few turns.
- Remove the tie rod from the wheel bearing housing and remove the nut.
1. Ball Joint Puller (T10187)
- Loosen nuts - arrows -.
- Remove the control arm from the ball joint.
- Remove the driveshaft outer joint from the wheel hub.
- Secure drive axle to body using wire.
- Move the engine/transmission jack (V.A.G 1383 A) under the wheel bearing housing.
- Remove threaded connection of wheel bearing housing/suspension strut - arrow -.
- Insert spreader (3424) into slot of wheel bearing housing.
- Using a ratchet and the spreader (3424) , open the wheel bearing housing slot.
- Remove the wheel bearing housing from the suspension strut.
• If the wheel bearing housing is being replaced, then the ball joint must also be replaced. Use new nuts.
Installing
Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following:
- Install the brake caliper.
- Tighten driveshaft bolt onto the wheel hub. Refer to => [ Threaded Connection Between Driveshaft and Wheel Hub, Loosening and Tightening ] Procedures.
- Install the ABS speed sensor.
It is necessary to perform a vehicle alignment if the wheel bearing housing is replaced.
- Install the front wheel and tighten the bolts.
