Valve Guide: Testing and Inspection

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

• Dial Gauge Holder (VW 387)

• Dial Gauge 0-10 mm (VAS 6079)

Procedure

• If the valve is replaced during a repair, use the new valve for measurement.

• Due to different stem diameters, only use an intake valve in the intake guide and an exhaust valve in the exhaust guide.

- Install the dial gauge 0-10 mm (VAS 6079) and the dial gauge holder (VW 387) to the cylinder head.






- Place the valve in the valve guide.

• The end of the valve stem must be flush with the guide.

- Determine the tip clearance.

• Wear limit: 1.0 mm.

- If the wear limit is exceeded, measure using a new valve.

- Replace the cylinder head if the wear limit is still exceeded.

• The valve guides cannot be replaced.
