Severely Discharged Battery, Charging
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Battery Charger (VAS 5903)

Do not check or charge a battery when the visual indicator has no color or is bright yellow. Jump starting must not be used!
There is a risk of explosion during testing, charging or jump starting.
The battery must be replaced.
• The polarity protection of the charger clamps is not active in the operation mode "charging severely discharged batteries/Support mode". Connect the charger clamps to the battery terminals correctly according to polarity!
• Always set the operating mode that corresponds to the battery. Refer to the Operating Instructions for the (VAS 5903).
• The (VAS 5903) does not detect a severely discharged battery, refer to => [ Severely Discharged Batteries ] Severely Discharged Batteries.
• Do not touch START/STOP if the charge clamps are connected incorrectly! The (VAS 5903) can be damaged.
The (VAS 5903) will not automatically recognize the battery if the battery voltage is less than 2 volts.

• The battery temperature must be minimum 10 °C (50° F).
• Severely discharged batteries in vehicles must be replaced prior to delivery. Pre-existing damage cannot be ruled out.
Procedure
• Switch off the ignition and all electrical consumers.
• Remove the key.
- Connect the (VAS 5903). The last selected operation mode is shown on the display, refer to => [ Battery Charger VAS 5903 ] Battery Charger VAS 5903.
- Press the INFO button to select the battery type.
The symbol - 1 - for service charging of wet batteries or the symbol - 2 - for service charging of Gel/Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM) batteries is indicated in the display.
- Set the battery capacity (Ah) on the battery to be charged with the corresponding [Up Arrow] or [Down Arrow] button.
- Attach the red charging clamp (+) to the battery positive terminal.
- Connect the black charging clamp (-) to the negative terminal on the battery/negative connector.
- Press the START/STOP button for approximately 5 seconds. The menu selection "Charging severely discharged batteries/Support mode" is activated.
- Press the [Up Arrow] or [Down Arrow] button to set the battery voltage (6 V/ 12 V /24 V).
• If no button is touched within 5 seconds, the (VAS 5903) will return to the main menu (operating mode selection).
- Confirm selected battery voltage with START/STOP button.
Then the inquiry about the correct polarity of the charger clamps is made.
- Verify that the charger clamps are connected to the correct polarity.
- Confirm charging clips are connected to correct poles via START/STOP.
The (VAS 5903) begins charging the severely discharged battery.
End the battery charging process
- Press START/STOP button.
- Remove the charger clamps from the battery terminals.
- Disconnect the (VAS 5903).
