Wiper Arm: Service and Repair
Wiper Arms
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Torque Wrench (V.A.G 1331)
Removal
- Move the wiper arms to the service/winter position. Refer to=> [ Windshield Wiper System ] Windshield Wiper System.
- Open the hood and fold the wiper arms away from the windshield.
• Joint-free wiper blades are very flexible. When lifting the wiper blades away from the windshield, only grasp them in the area of the wiper blade mount.
- Use a screwdriver to pry the caps - arrows - from the wiper arms - A -.
- Release the mounting nut - arrow - without completely unscrewing it.
- Loosen the wiper arm - 1 - from the cone using sideways motions.
- Now completely unscrew the mounting nut and remove the wiper arm.
- Repeat this procedure on the front passenger side as necessary.
Installation
Installation is performed in the reverse order of removal. Note the following:
• The wipers cannot be activated when the hood is open and the vehicle is at standstill.
- Close the hood.
• Move the wiper motor to the end position, switch on the ignition, and briefly press the steering column lever down 1x (single-wipe mode).
- Move the wiper motor to the end position.
- Switch the ignition off again once the wiper motor shuts off.
- Open the hood.
• Mounting nuts of wiper arms are to be tightened to tightening specification only after end position of windshield wiper blades has been set.
- Mount the wiper arms on the wiper arm shafts in the end position and tighten the mounting nuts - arrow - hand-tight.
- Adjust windshield wiper blade park position. Refer to=> [ Windshield Wiper Blades, Adjusting Park Position ] Adjustments.
