Starter Motor: Service and Repair

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

When disconnecting and connecting the battery, always perform the work procedure as described in the repair information. Refer to=> [ Battery, Disconnecting and Connecting ] Service and Repair.

Malfunction Recognition and Display

For fault finding, use the Vehicle diagnosis, Testing and Information System (VAS 5051B) in the "Guided fault finding" function. Refer to=> [ Starter, Checking ] Testing and Inspection.

Check the starter. Refer to=> [ Starter, Checking ] Testing and Inspection.

Removal

- Disconnect the battery. Refer to=> [ Battery, Disconnecting and Connecting ] Service and Repair.

- Remove the air filter housing.

- Remove the noise insulation.

- Unscrew the ground wire - arrow - from the transmission and put aside.






- Slide the protective cap in the - direction of the arrow - off of the solenoid switch.






- Release the harness connector of terminal 50 - 2 - and disconnect.






- Unscrew the mounting nut - 1 - and remove the positive wire underneath it from the connection threads of the solenoid switch.

- Unscrew the upper starter mounting bolt - arrow -.






All hose connections of the charge air system are secured by spring-type clamps or by connector couplings. The following must be observed for connector couplings:






Release the harness connector by pulling the locking clamp - arrow -.

Disconnect the hose/pipe without tools.

- Remove the charge air hose - 2 - and the charge air pipe - 1 -.






- Unscrew the lower starter mounting bolt - arrow -.






- Remove the starter upward from the vehicle.

Installation

Installation is performed in the reverse order of removal. Note the following:

All hose connections of the charge air system are secured by spring-type clamps or by connector couplings. The following must be observed for connector couplings:






Connect the hose/pipe without tools.

Make sure the retaining tabs are locked in place - arrow -.

- Tighten the threaded connections to the required tightening torque. Refer to=> [ Starter Overview ] Service and Repair.
