Bevel Box Gear Oil Level, Checking and Filling
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Torque Wrench (5-50 Nm) (V.A.G 1331)
• Charging Device F/Haldex 2 Coupling (VAS 6291 A)
• Adapter for Oil Filling (VAS 6291/2)
• Drip Tray for VAS 6100 (VAS 6208)
The bevel box is attached to the side of the transmission and has it own oil system.
Bevel box gear oil specification, refer to Fluid Capacity Tables.
Checking
Requirements
• The bevel box must be in its installed location.
- Remove the noise insulation.
- Place the drip tray for VAS 6100 (VAS 6208) below.
• Cover the area below the plug - arrow - with a cloth.
- Remove the plug - arrow - from the bevel box.
It is necessary to replace the plug - arrow -.
The oil level is correct if the bevel box is filled with oil up to the bottom edge of the hole.
If oil comes in contact with the bevel box, clean the bevel box.
- Fill with gear oil.
- Install the plug - arrow - and tighten it to 15 Nm.
Filling
Requirements
• The vehicle must be horizontal.
- Use the charging device f/haldex 2 coupling (VAS 6291) to add oil:
- Route the charging device f/haldex 2 coupling (VAS 6291) hose behind the right drive axle and out through the right wheel housing.
• Cover the area under the plug - arrow - with a cloth.
- Remove the plug - arrow - from the bevel box.
- Install the adapter adapter for oil filling (VAS 6291/2) - A -.
- Use an internal socket wrench.
- arrow - = 5 mm socket wrench, commercially available
- Lock the elbow - B - with the adapter - A -.
• The hose must not hang through.
- Close the valve - arrow -.
- Attach the oil container - A - to the charging device f/haldex 2 coupling (VAS 6291).
- Open the valve - arrow - and hold the oil container as illustrated.
The bevel box is now filled.
• Fluid should leak out of the adapter - A - if the bevel box is filled correctly.
• If the oil still does not leak out, repeat the filling procedure.
- If the oil leaks out at the adapter - A -, hold the oil container in such a way so that any excess oil flows back into the container.
- When the oil stops flowing, disconnect the adapter for oil filling (VAS 6291/2) by pressing the tab in - direction of arrow -.
- Remove the adapter for oil filling (VAS 6291/2).
- Install the old plug and tighten it gently.
- Start the engine, engage any gear and let the transmission turn for approximately 2 minutes.
- Turn off the engine and remove the plug.
- Check the oil level and fill again with oil up to the lower edge of the hole.
- Install the plug - arrow - and tighten it to 15 Nm.
If oil comes in contact with the bevel box, clean the bevel box carefully.
- Install the noise insulation.
