Right Flange Shaft and Seal






Right Flange Shaft and Seal

The seal - 1 - and the sleeve - 2 - are a single component.






The seal and the sleeve can only be replaced together.

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Thrust Piece (T10148)

Spindle from Seal Installer Set - Rear Diff (3066)

Slide Hammer-Complete Set (VW 771)

Additional Part for VW 771 (VW 771/37)

Torque Wrench (5-50 Nm) (V.A.G 1331)

Drip Tray

Removing

- Remove the noise insulation.

- Turn steering as far as possible toward the right.

- Remove the right drive axle heat shield bolts - arrows - and shield, if equipped.






- Remove the right drive axle from transmission flange shaft.

- Tie the drive axle as high up as possible. Be careful not to damage the paint on the drive axle.

On some engines, the drive axle cannot be tied up so that the transmission flange shaft can be removed.

Remove the right drive axle.

- Place the used oil collecting and extracting device or drip tray (V.A.G 1782) under the transmission.

- Remove the bolt for the right flange shaft, by installing two bolts into the flange and counter holding the flange shaft using a pry bar.






- Remove the flange shaft and the pressure spring.

- Remove the seal and sleeve together.






A ridge is located on the internal diameter of the sleeve.

- Attach the additional part for VW 771 (VW 771/37) directly behind the ridge inside the sleeve.

- Using force, push the additional part for VW 771 (VW 771/37) into the sleeve.

Installing

- Clean the seat for the seal inside the transmission.

- Install the seal and sleeve together.






A Install the spindle from the seal installer set - rear diff (3066) into the threaded piece in the differential.
B M12 nut

- Turn the nut - B - and pull the seal with sleeve all the way over the thrust piece (T10148).

- Fill the space between the sealing and dust lip half way with sealing grease for seal (G 052 128 A1).

- Install the flange shaft.






- Push the flange shaft against the pressure spring on the transmission housing and tighten the bolt - arrow - to specification, see - item 10 - in => [ Differential Overview ] Description and Operation.

- Install the drive axle to the flange shaft.

- Install the right drive axle heat shield and bolts - arrows -, if it was removed earlier.






- Check the transmission fluid level and fill if necessary. Refer to => [ Transmission Fluid, Checking and Filling ] Service and Repair.

- Install the noise insulation.
