Clutch Slave Cylinder: Service and Repair






Clutch Slave Cylinder

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Torque Wrench (5-50 Nm) (V.A.G 1331)

Removing

- Turn off the ignition and disconnect the battery ground cable.

- Remove the air filter housing.

- Pull the locking mechanism all the way forward for the selector cable in the - direction of arrow 1 - and then unlock it to the left in the - direction of arrow 2 -.






- Push the relay lever forward in the - direction of arrow 3 -.

- Remove the clip - arrow 1 - and then remove the relay lever and the cable retainer.






- Remove the shift cable lock washer - arrow 2 - from the transmission shift lever - A -.

- Remove the shift cable from the pin.

- Remove the nut - arrow 3 - and then remove the transmission shift lever - A -.

- Remove the cable bracket bolts - arrows - from the transmission.






- Secure the cable bracket to the side with the cables attached.

- Free up the wire - 2 - on the bracket - 1 -.






- Remove the bolt - 3 - and then the bracket.

- Remove the transmission support bolts - arrows A - and support.






- Remove the clutch slave cylinder bolts - arrows B -.

- Place a lint free cloth under the clutch master cylinder.

The hose/line assembly can be clamped off using a hose clamp up to 25 mm dia. (3094).






- Remove the clip - 1 - for the hose/line assembly from the clutch slave cylinder.

- Remove the hose/line assembly - 2 - from the clutch slave cylinder and seal it.

Do not press the clutch pedal anymore.

- Remove the clutch slave cylinder.

Installing

Installation is performed in the reverse order of removal while observing the following:

- Grease the clutch slave cylinder plunger head with grease for clutch plate splines (G 000 100).

- Install the clutch slave cylinder and tighten the bolts - arrows B - to specification.






- Attach the hose/line assembly to the clutch slave cylinder.

- Push the hose/line assembly clip all the way in.

- Pull on the hose/line assembly to make sure it is secure.

- Install the transmission support and bolts - arrows A -.

- Bleed the clutch system after installing the clutch slave cylinder. Refer to => [ Clutch System, Bleeding ] Procedures.

Assemble the shift mechanism. Refer to => [ Shift and Selector Cables ] Shift Mechanism Overviews.

Adjust the shift mechanism. Refer to => [ Shift Mechanism, Adjusting ] Adjustments.

- Install the air filter housing.

- Connect the battery ground cable.

Tightening Specifications

Clutch slave cylinder to the transmission, see - item 9 - in => [ Clutch Release Mechanism Overview ] Service and Repair.

Transmission shift lever to gear shift shaft, see - item 6 - in => [ Shift and Selector Cables ] Shift Mechanism Overviews.

Cable bracket to transmission, see - item 15 - in => [ Shift and Selector Cables ] Shift Mechanism Overviews.

Transmission support to transmission mount bracket and transmission:






- Replace the bolts - arrows -.

- Tighten the new bolts hand tight.

- Then, tighten the bolts to 20 Nm + 90° (1/4) additional turn.
