Brake Cylinder, Checking for Leaks

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Disassembly wedge (3409)

Torque wrench (V.A.G 1331)

Removing

- Loosen the wheel bolts.

- Raise the vehicle.

- Remove the wheel.

- Reset brake. Refer to => [ Rear Drum Brake, Resetting ] Procedures.

- Remove brake drum. Refer to => [ Brake Drum ] Brake Drum.

- Remove the dust boots - 1 - from the brake cylinder - 2 -.

Be careful not to damage the dust boot when removing it.

- See if there is brake fluid in the dust boot.

It is absolutely necessary to replace the brake cylinder if there are leaks or damage.

Cleaning:

Do not blow brake system using compressed air, the dust produced is harmful to health!

Use only appropriate solvents for cleaning brake system.

Installing

Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following:

- Install the wheel and tighten.

- Adjust parking brake. Refer to => [ Parking Brake, Adjusting, with Drum Brakes ] Parking Brake, Adjusting, with Drum Brakes.
