Supplementary Set (VAS 6131/13)

Socket (T40058)

TORX(R) Socket T60 (T40087)

Procedure

The engine and transmission assembly is removed and on the scissor lift table (VAS 6131).

- Remove the particulate filter mount bolts - arrows -.

- Remove the front exhaust pipe with catalytic converter to support bolt - arrow -.

- Disconnect the connectors for the catalyst temperature sensor 1 (orange) and exhaust gas temperature 3 (brown).

- Free up the electrical wires for both these components.

- Remove the bolts - 1 -, loosen the bolt - 2 - and remove the turbocharger heat shield.

- Remove front exhaust pipe with catalytic converter nuts - arrows - from the turbocharger.

- Remove the front exhaust pipe with catalytic converter and particulate filter.

- Free up the coolant hoses - arrow -.

- Loosen the hose clamp - 2 - and lift the clamp - 4 - to remove the coolant hoses.

- Free up the transmission vent hose - arrow -.

- Remove the bolts - 1 and 3 -, then remove the left coolant pipe from the back of the transmission and the coolant hoses.

- Remove the engine speed sensor connector - arrow - from the bracket and disconnect it.

- Remove the front driveshaft from the transfer case.

Place a cloth underneath to soak up any leaking transmission fluid.

Follow the rules of cleanliness when working on an automatic transmission.

- Remove the bolts - 1 and 2 - and the Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) pipes from the transmission.

- Remove the bolt - arrow - and the ATF pipes.

Risk of destroying due to a reversed running direction of a used ribbed belt.

Before removing the ribbed belt, mark the running direction with chalk or felt-tip pen for reinstallation later.

- Rotate the tensioner in the - direction of the arrow - using the TORX socket T60 (T40087) to relieve the tension on the ribbed belt.

- Remove the ribbed belt and release the tension on the tensioner.

- Remove the generator.

- Disconnect the electrical connector - 2 -.

- Remove the nut - 1 - and the battery positive (B+) wire.

- Remove the bolt - 3 - from the engine mount bracket.

- Remove the bolts - 1 and 2 - and the starter.

- Assemble the adapter (T40058) as follows:

The large diameter - arrow 1 - faces the engine.

The small diameter - arrow 2 - faces the adapter.

- Loosen the torque converter bolts, counter hold the crankshaft using the adapter (T40058).

Ignore the - arrow -.

Components could be destroyed by the camshaft timing chain jumping off.

Only rotate the crankshaft in engine rotation direction.

- Remove the 6 torque converter bolts - arrows - through the opening for the starter (rotate the crankshaft 1/3 rotation in each case).

- Secure the engine and transmission at the oil pan from tilting, for example, with a wood blocks.

- Remove the engine/transmission bolts - 3 through 10 -.

- Separate the transmission from the engine. While doing this, pry the torque converter off the drive plate using a screwdriver- arrow -.

- Loosen the clamping screws - 1 - on the sides of the scissor lift table (VAS 6131) and then pull the rear table section with the transmission back slightly.

- Secure the torque converter in the transmission using the bracket (30 - 211 A) to prevent it from falling out.
