Right Stub Shaft and Seal
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Slide Hammer-Complete Set (VW 771)
• Additional Part For VW 771 (VW 771/37)
• Torque Wrench (5-50 Nm) (V.A.G 1331)
• Counter Hold Tool (T10371)
• Thrust Piece (3305)
• Sealing Grease for Seal (G 052 128 A1)
• Grease for Clutch Plate Splines (G 000 100)
- Lift the vehicle.
- Remove the noise insulation under the engine/transmission assembly.
- Remove the drive axle heat shield bolts - arrows - and shield, if equipped.
- Remove the ball joint nuts - arrows - from the control arm.
- Remove the right drive axle from the transmission and tie it up.
- Remove the circlip - arrow A - and the O-ring - arrow B - from the stub shaft.
- Counter hold the stub shaft using the counter hold tool (T10371) and remove the bolt - arrow -.
- Place a drip tray under the transmission.
- Remove the stub shaft.
- Remove the stub shaft using the slide hammer (VW 771) and additional part For VW 771 (VW 771/37).
Installing
- Lightly coat the new seal with oil on the outer edge and fill the space between the sealing lips - arrow - halfway with sealing grease for seal (G 052 128 A1).
The seal must fit flush with the seal seat. Do not install it too deep. Install the seal using thrust piece (3305).
- Counterhold the stub shaft using the counter hold tool (T10371) and tighten the bolt - arrow - to specification, see - item 12 - in => [ Differential Overview ] Removal and Replacement.
- Install a new circlip - arrow A - and a new O-ring - arrow B -.
Lubricate the stub shaft splines with grease for clutch plate splines (G 000 100)
- Install the right drive axle to the transmission.
- Install the drive axle heat shield and bolts - arrows -, if equipped.
- Check the transmission fluid level. Refer to => [ Transmission Fluid Level, Checking ] Procedures.
- Install the noise insulation under the engine/transmission.
