Transmission Fluid Level, Checking and Filling
Please observe the notes:
• Regarding the general repair information, refer to => [ General Repair Information ] General Repair Information.
• Regarding transmission fluid, refer to => [ Automatic Transmission Fluid ] Automatic Transmission Fluid.
• Regarding the overflow tube, refer to => [ Transmission, With
and Without a Filling Tube ] Transmission.
• It may be necessary to shorten the pipe on the adapter for oil filling (VAS 6262 A).
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Torque Wrench (5-50 Nm) (V.A.G 1331)
• Used Oil Collecting and Extracting Device (V.A.G 1782)
• Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing and Information System (VAS 5051)
• Drip Tray for VAS 6100 (VAS 6208)
• Adapter for Oil Filling (VAS 6262 A)
• Adapter for Filling ATF Oil (VAS 6262/2)
• Pipe Cutter (VAS 6056/2)
Shortening the Pipe on the Adapter for Oil Filling (VAS 6262 A) :
- Shorten the pipe to dimension - a -. This assures that pipe will not touch the bottom of some oil containers.
- a - = 210 mm
• Dimension - a - is measured starting from the green surface on the adapter for oil filling (VAS 6262 A).
- Make a mark on the pipe, at dimension - a -, and cut the pipe using the pipe cutter (VAS 6056/2).
Use the transmission fluid available as a replacement part.
- Always replace the seal - arrow - on the plug when checking the fluid level.
Checking
- Turn off the engine.
The fluid temperature must not be more than approximately 30 °C (86 °F) at the start of the test.
• Transmission is not in emergency running, the fluid temperature not above approximately 30 °C (86 °F).
• Vehicles is horizontal
• The selector level is in the "P" position.
- Connect the vehicle diagnostic tester and move through the selections until it is ready for operation. Refer to => [ Vehicle Diagnosis Tester, Connecting and Selecting Functions ] Scan Tool Testing and Procedures.
- Press Guided Functions.
- Select the vehicle, the transmission and check ATF level.
- Press the -> button.
- Start the engine.
- Lift the vehicle.
- Place a drip tray under the transmission.
- Press the -> button.
If the test temperature shown is: 35 to 45° C (95 to 113°F).
- Remove the plug and the overflow tube - arrow - from the transmission pan.
Transmission fluid will flow out of the overflow tube.
If transmission fluid continues to drain out of the hole:
The fluid does not need to be topped off.
- Install the plug with new seal and tighten it to 27 Nm. The fluid level test is completed.
If no fluid drips out of the hole:
- Fill with transmission fluid.
Filling
- Install the adapter for oil filling VAS 6291/2 (VAS 6262/2) to the transmission pan hand tight with the engine running.
- Shake the fluid bottles before opening.
- Read the information regarding the pipe before installing the adapter for oil filling (VAS 6262 A) to the fluid container.
- Fill with 1 liter fluid.
- Install the adapter for oil filling (VAS 6262) to the quick release coupling.
If transmission fluid flows out of the adapter hole:
The transmission fluid does not need to be topped off.
- Allow the fluid to drain until it drips.
- Install the plug with a new seal and tighten it to 27 Nm. The fluid level test is completed.
If transmission fluid does not drip:
- Fill with another liter of fluid.
Too little or too much transmission fluid will impair the transmission. If 2 liters are missing, you should check the transmission more closely. There is probably a larger leak.
