Wiper Arm: Service and Repair






Wiper Arms

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Torque Wrench (V.A.G 1331)

Removal

- Bring wiper arms to service-/winter position. Refer to => [ Wiper Arm Service-/Winter Position ] Wiper Arm Service-/Winter Position.

- Open hood.

- Fold wiper arm away from window.

Do not grasp wiper blade when doing this.

- Pry off cover caps - arrows - from wiper arms - A - using a screwdriver.






The following illustrations show the driver's side wiper arm.

Removal of the front passenger's side wiper arm is performed in the same sequence.

- Loosen nuts - arrow - but do not remove completely.






- Loosen wiper arm - 1 - from cone using sideways motions.

- Remove the nut completely and remove wiper arm.

Wiper cannot be activated with hood open and vehicle at standstill.

- Close hood.

- Deactivate APP function. Refer to => [ Alternating Park Position Of Wiper Motor (APP Function), Deactivating ] Testing and Inspection.

- Let wiper motor run into end position and then switch off ignition.


Follow the procedure in the Repair Information when disconnecting and connecting the battery. Refer to => [ Disconnecting and Connecting Battery In Engine Compartment ] Disconnecting and Connecting Battery In Engine Compartment or => [ Disconnecting and Connecting Batteries In Luggage Compartment ] Disconnecting and Connecting Batteries In Luggage Compartment.

- Disconnect the battery. Refer to => [ Disconnecting and Connecting Battery In Engine Compartment ] Disconnecting and Connecting Battery In Engine Compartment or => [ Disconnecting and Connecting Batteries In Luggage Compartment ] Disconnecting and Connecting Batteries In Luggage Compartment.

Installation

- Connect battery. Refer to => [ Disconnecting and Connecting Battery In Engine Compartment ] Disconnecting and Connecting Battery In Engine Compartment or => [ Disconnecting and Connecting Batteries In Luggage Compartment ] Disconnecting and Connecting Batteries In Luggage Compartment.

- Close hood.

Mounting nuts of wiper arms are to be tightened to tightening specification only after end position of windshield wiper blades has been set.

- Drive wiper motor into the end position.

- To do so, switch ignition on and briefly press the windshield wiper stalk down once (one-touch wiping).

- After wiper motor stops completely, switch ignition off again.

- Open hood.

- Insert wiper arm on the wiper arm shaft in the approximate end position and screw on nuts hand-tight on the respective wiper arm - arrow -.






- Adjust the windshield wiper blade park position. Refer to => [ End Position Of Windshield Wiper Blades, Checking/Adjusting ] Adjustments.

- Tighten the nut to 20 Nm.
