Steering Column
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Torque Wrench (5-50 Nm) (V.A.G 1331)
• Torque Wrench (40-200 Nm) (V.A.G 1332)
Removing
The steering column is delivered only as a complete replacement part. Servicing is not possible.
Before working on the electrical system, or removing the steering wheel and steering column, the following conditions must be met:
• The technician must electrostatic discharge. This is done by touching a grounded metal part, for example, water lines, heater pipe, metal carriers or the shop hoist.
If this not done, the electronic steering column lock control module could fail later!
• Disconnect the battery ground cable.
• The wheels must be in the straight ahead position.
If these notes are not observed, the airbag system may not function properly during vehicle operation!
- Set the wheels to the straight ahead position.
- Pull the handle beneath the steering column downward.
- Swing the steering column downward as far as possible and pull it out.
- Push the handle under the steering column upward again.
- Remove the steering wheel airbag.
- Remove the steering wheel. Refer to => [ Steering Wheel ] Service and Repair.
- Remove the steering column switch trim.
- Remove the drivers foot well cover.
- Remove the drivers side trim.
- Remove the foot well vent under the steering column.
- Remove the steering column switch. .
- Disconnect all harness connectors and the Ground (GND) wire from the steering column.
- Remove the retainers - arrows - and trim - 1 -.
- Remove the bolt - 1 - and pull off the universal joint - 2 - from the steering gear.
- Remove the wire channel - 1 - beneath the steering column. To do so, slightly lift the tabs - arrows - on both sides and pull the channel out of the guide on the steering column.
With a Manual Transmission
- Remove the left bolt and remove the clutch pedal impact brace.
With a Automatic Transmission or a Direct Shift Gearbox (DSG(R))
- Remove the left steering column bolt.
Continuation for All
- Remove the right bolt and the brake pedal impact brace.
- Remove the steering column bolts
- Lower the steering column slightly and carefully pull out upward.
Pay particular attention to the correct handling and transporting of the steering column. Refer to => [ Steering Column, Handling and Transporting ] Steering Column Handling and Transporting.
Installing
- Engage the steering column into the assembly aid on the bracket.
- Align the steering column to the bracket and install.
When doing this, the pins - arrows A - on the bracket and the holes - arrows B - in the steering column must be positioned toward each other and inserted into one another.
Only in this way is the correct installed position of the steering column to bracket guaranteed.
- Install and tighten the steering column bolts.
- Install the brake pedal impact brace and the right bolt.
- Tighten the bolt
With a Automatic Transmission or a DSG(R)
- Install and tighten the left steering column bolt
With a Manual Transmission
- Install the clutch pedal impact brace and left bolt
- Tighten the bolt
Continuation for All
- Install the wire channel - 1 - beneath the steering column.
The tabs - arrows - must engage into the guide on both sides.
- Connect the universal joint - 2 - to the steering gear pinion and tighten the bolt - 1 -.
- Install the foot well trim - 1 - and secure with the retainers - arrows -.
- Connect all harness connectors and the ground (GND) wire to the steering column.
- Install the foot well vent under the steering column.
- Install the drivers side foot well trim.
- Install the drivers side foot well cover.
- Install the steering column switch. .
- Install the steering column switch trim.
- Installing the steering wheel. Refer to => [ Steering Wheel ] Service and Repair.
- Install the airbag to the steering wheel.
- If the steering column with an electronic steering column lock control module was replaced, then the electronic steering column lock control module must be adapted. Refer to the vehicle diagnostic tester.

Follow the instructions on the screen to perform the adaptation.
- Perform the steering angle sensor basic setting using the vehicle diagnostic tester.
Steering Angle Sensor Basic Setting Must Be Checked After the Following Work
• If the steering angle sensor was removed or replaced
• After removing or replacing the steering column
• After removing or replacing the steering gear
• If the steering wheel was offset.
