Transmission Fluid Level, Checking and Adding

Please observe the information:






Regarding the repair information, refer to => [ General Repair Information ] General Repair Information.

Regarding the transmission fluid, refer to => [ Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) ] Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF).

Regarding the overflow tube, refer to => [ Transmissions with and without a Filling Tube ] Transmission.

It may be necessary to shorten the pipe on the adapter for oil filling (VAS 6262 A).

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Torque Wrench (5-50 Nm) (V.A.G 1331)

Used Oil Collecting and Extracting Device (V.A.G 1782)

Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing and Information System (VAS 5051)

Drip Tray for VAS 6100 (VAS 6208)

Adapter for Oil Filling (VAS 6262 A)

Adapter for Filling ATF Oil (VAS 6262/2)

Pipe Cutter (VAS 6056/2)

Shortening the Pipe on the Adapter for Oil Filling (VAS 6262 A) :

- Shorten the pipe to 210 mm - a -. This assures the pipe will not touch the bottom of some containers.






Dimension - a - is measured starting from the green surface in the cap of the adapter for oil filling (VAS 6262 A).

- Make a mark on the pipe, 210 mm from the green surface and cut the pipe using the pipe cutter (VAS 6056/2).






Use the transmission fluid that is available as a replacement part. Refer to the Parts Catalog.

- Always replace the seal - arrow - on the plug when checking the fluid level.






Checking

- Turn off the engine.

The transmission fluid temperature must not be more than approximately 30 °C (86 °F) at the start of the test.

The transmission must not be in emergency running mode, The transmission fluid temperature is not above approximately 30 °C (86 °F).

The vehicle is horizontal

The selector lever is in the "P" position.

- Connect the vehicle diagnostic tester and move through the selections until it is ready for operation. Refer to => [ Vehicle Diagnosis Tester, Connecting and Selecting Functions ] Scan Tool Testing and Procedures.

- Press the"right" button, Guided Functions.

- Select the vehicle, the transmission and press check ATF level.

- Press the -> button.

- Start the engine.

- Lift the vehicle.

- Place a drip tray under the transmission.

- Press the -> button.

If the test temperature displayed is 35 to 45 °C (95 to 113 °F).

- Remove the plug from the transmission pan.






Transmission fluid drains out of the overflow tube.






If transmission fluid continues to drain out of the hole:

The transmission fluid does not need to be topped off.

- Reinstall the plug with new seal, and tighten it to 27 Nm. The fluid level check is completed.

If no transmission fluid drains out of the hole:

- Fill with automatic transmission fluid.

Filling

- Install the adapter for filling ATF oil (VAS 6262/2) hand tight to the transmission pan with the engine running.






- Shake the bottle before opening.

- Read the information regarding the pipe before attaching the adapter for oil filling (VAS 6262 A) to the fluid container.

- Fill with 1 liter of fluid.

- Connect the adapter for oil filling (VAS 6262) quick release coupling to the adapter for oil filling (VAS 6262 A) and check:

If fluid drains out of the adapter hole:

The fluid does not need to be topped off.

- Allow the fluid to drain until it drips.

- Reinstall the plug with a new seal and tighten it to 27 Nm. The fluid level check is completed.

If fluid does not drip out:

- Fill with another liter.

Too little or too much transmission fluid will impair the transmission. If 2 liters are missing, you should check the transmission more closely. There is probably a larger leak.
