Second Battery or Auxiliary Battery in Luggage Compartment
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Torque Wrench (V.A.G 1331/)
Risk of injury. Follow all Warnings and Safety Precautions. Refer to => [ Warnings and Safety Precautions ] Testing and Inspection.
When disconnecting and connecting the battery, always perform the work procedure as described in => [ Battery, Disconnecting and Connecting ] Battery, Disconnecting and Connecting. Not adhering to sequence will result in the deactivation of Main Battery Switch -E74- and subsequent damage to electrical system components.
• On vehicles without collapsible spare tire, an absorbent glass mat (AGM) battery must also be installed. On vehicles with a collapsible spare tire, there may also be a wet battery with visual indicator (visual indicator).
Removal
- Disconnect batteries. Refer to => [ Disconnecting Sequence ] One-Battery Layout with Auxiliary Battery and Two Battery Layout, Disconnecting and Connecting.
- Disconnect central gas vent hose - arrow - from top cover.
- Remove nut - 1 - and remove battery bottom rail bracket - 2 -.
- Fold battery handles - arrows - upward.
- Grasp battery by handles and lift from battery box.
Installation
If battery is not secured properly, the following risks are possible:
• Shortened battery service life due to vibration damage (explosion hazard).
• if battery is not secured properly, the plates within the battery can be damaged.
• Damage to battery casing caused by bracket (possible electrolyte leakage, high subsequent costs).
• Reduced collision safety.
Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following:
- Tighten the battery bottom rail bracket nut to the specification shown in => [ Fastener Tighten Specifications, Battery ] [1][2]Battery.
Make sure the central gas vent hose is attached to the battery - arrow - and that it cannot get disconnected when the battery is being installed. Only then can battery be properly vented.
- After installing, verify battery is properly seated.
• When connecting battery, always perform work procedure as described in => [ Connecting Sequence ] One-Battery Layout with Auxiliary Battery and Two Battery Layout, Disconnecting and Connecting. Not adhering to sequence will result in the deactivation of Main Battery Switch -E74- and subsequent damage to electrical system components.
• Observe notes for threaded connections of battery terminals. Refer to => [ Battery Post/Terminal ] Battery Post/Terminal.
- Connect battery. Refer to => [ Battery, Disconnecting and Connecting ] Battery, Disconnecting and Connecting.
