Over-Center Spring






Over-Center Spring

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Torque Wrench (5-50 Nm) (V.A.G 1331)

Removing

- Move the driver seat all the way back and raise the steering wheel to the highest position.

- Remove the storage compartment and cover on the driver side.






- Remove the footwell vent - 1 -.

The footwell vent may look different than what is shown in the illustration.






- Remove the bolt - 2 - and the impact bolster support - 1 -.

- Remove the fuse panel under the instrument panel on the left side and move it to the side.

- Remove the relay panel under the instrument panel on the left side and move it to the side.

- Remove the retainers - arrows - and the footwell trim panel.






- Remove the bolt - 1 - and the universal joint - 2 - from the steering gear.






Remove the sound absorber - arrow - from over the bracket/clutch pedal, if equipped.






- Remove the retainers - A -.






- Remove the sound absorber.

- Push the sound absorber near the upper nut - 1 - above the clutch pedal - A - in the - direction of the arrow -.






- Remove the nut - 2 - and the bolt - 5 - and then remove the clutch pedal - 1 - from the mounting bracket - 3 -.






The clutch pedal remains engaged to the master cylinder actuator rod.

- Move the clutch pedal downward and remove the over-center spring - 4 -.

Installing

Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following:

Replace the self-locking nuts.

- Install the over-center spring into the bracket from the top.

- The mounting area - arrow - for the clutch pedal pivot pin - A - must be positioned vertically.






- Insert the clutch pedal pivot pin into the mounting in the over-center spring.

- Press the clutch pedal slightly, push the bolt through and tighten the self-locking nut.

Some vehicles have a sound absorber - arrow - over the mounting bracket/clutch pedal.






- Bring the sound absorber back into the installed position.






- Install the impact bolster support - 1 - and tighten the bolt - 2 - to specification.

- Install the universal joint - 2 - to the steering gear and install the new bolt - 1 -.






- Perform a basic setting on the steering angle sensor (G85) using the vehicle diagnosis, testing and information system (VAS 5051).
