Driver Side Airbag
Driver Side Airbag
Advanced Airbag System
The Advanced Airbag System refers to an airbag module with two airbag stages which are deployed depending on the severity of the accident. For less severe crashes, the second stage is not deployed.
• Read the Safety Instructions for working with airbags, belt tensioners and battery cut-out units. Refer to => [ Airbag, Belt Tensioner and Battery Cut-Out Units General Safety Precautions ] Airbag, Belt Tensioner and Battery Cut-Out Units General Safety Precautions.
• Airbag modules in which only the first stage has been deployed can cause severe injuries by deployment of the second stage.
At this time, there is no possibility of checking whether the second stage has been deployed definitively. For this reason, the airbag module must be disposed of in an orderly manner, conforming to national legislation, in its original packaging! Direct questions to your importer!
Disposal of undeployed airbag units as industrial waste/garbage is not permissible!
• Removal and installation of airbag unit is described for multi-function steering wheel.
• The screwdriver named in the following procedures should have a blade width of about 7 mm.
Removal
• Read the Safety Instructions for working with airbags, belt tensioners and battery cut-out units. Refer to => [ Airbag, Belt Tensioner and Battery Cut-Out Units General Safety Precautions ] Airbag, Belt Tensioner and Battery Cut-Out Units General Safety Precautions.
• Airbag modules in which only the first stage has been deployed can cause severe injuries by deployment of the second stage.
- Disconnect vehicle battery.
- Adjust steering wheel height so that it is located in the highest position.
- Adjust steering wheel depth (reach) so it is in the fully extended position.
- Turn steering wheel into the position depicted.
- Insert a screwdriver into hole on rear side of steering wheel until it stops (approx. 8 mm).
- Turn the screwdriver in the direction of passenger side door - arrow -; this unlocks the airbag unit locking frame on the right side of the steering wheel.
- Turn steering wheel 180° and disengage locking mechanism of airbag unit on left side of steering wheel as described.
- Turn steering wheel back 90° into center position.
- Remove airbag unit from steering wheel.
Electrostatic discharges can lead to an unintended deployment of the airbag. Therefore, mechanic must electrostatic discharge him-/herself before disconnecting harness connector. This is done, for example, by briefly touching the chassis or door striker pin.
- Press connector lock and disconnect connector - 1 -.
• Connector - 1 - is installed only on multi-function steering wheel.
- Release connector lock - direction of arrow - and disconnect airbag connector - 2 -.
Installation
- Check whether wiring harness - 3 - is routed as shown in the illustration.
- Connect the airbag connector - 2 - into the connector coupling. The connector must audibly engage.
- Insert connector - 1 - into connector coupling (only in vehicles with multi-function steering wheel).
- Push airbag unit into steering wheel.
- Check whether airbag unit is engaged on the left and right-hand side of the steering wheel.
- Switch on ignition.
Make sure that no persons are in the vehicle.
- Connect vehicle battery.
