• Familiarity with the function and operation is essential in the event of customer concerns. Refer to the Owner's Manual.
• Anti-theft code is equipped with protection code number, refer to.
• When performing servicing or Fault Finding use the Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing and Information System (VAS 5051B).
After connecting the battery, check all the vehicle accessories, for example, the radio, the clock, the Comfort packages.
General Information
The Premium 8 Sound System include the radio with a 6 disc CD changer and speakers inside the doors.
The radio has a connector position for using SD memory cards for playing audio content with an end stage with 4 x 20 watt output performance.
Speakers are designed as 3-way system at the front and as 2-way system at the rear.
The Premium 8 is available as a version which operates the speakers via 4 unit-internal speaker outputs or as a version with an Amplifier (R12). The speakers are connected directly to the amplifier and the radio speaker outputs are as the signal input for the amplifier.
The Premium 8 Sound System has the following speakers:
• Each front door has one bass speaker, one midrange speaker and one treble speaker.
• Each rear door has one bass speaker and one treble speaker.
There are connection options for connecting an amplifier / CD changer (R41) and a telephone.
An optional Satellite radio (R146) is integrated inside the Premium 8 radio.
The integrated 6-disc CD changer can play the following CDs:
• Audio CD
• CD-R
• CD-RW
• MP3
It is not possible to play the following formats:
• 8 cm CDs
• Mix CDs (CDs containing files and audio files)
• The CD changer has a transportation safeguard, which must be deactivated when a new radio is installed. Likewise, the transportation safeguard must be switched on, before a removed radio can be shipped. The radio must be connected to a voltage supply when doing this.
The antenna is located in rear window on Sedan models. The antennas on the Wagon model are located in the rear side window and in the roof antenna. The antenna system includes an integrated diversity function inside the radio.
Troubleshooting
The radio is equipped with OBD.
Use the Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing and Information System (VAS 5051B) under "Guided Fault Finding".
Transportation Safeguard, Activating and Deactivating
The transportation safeguard must be activated before shipping the Premium 8 and must be deactivated whenever a new radio is installed. This is done electronically using the buttons on the radio. After activating the transportation safeguard, the internal CD changer is in the transportation position.
Activating Transportation Safeguard:
Unit condition: ON or OFF. The radio must be connected to a voltage supply.
- Press and hold the function buttons marked with - arrows - simultaneously for 5 seconds.
"CDC transportation safeguard activated" appears in the radio display once the CD changer has reached its transportation position.
Deactivating Transportation Safeguard:
- Connect the radio and install it.
- Press and hold the function buttons marked with - arrows - simultaneously for 5 seconds.
The following will appear in the radio display: "CDC transportation safeguard activated".
The "deactivating" button also appears.
- Press the "deactivating" button.
Now the transportation safeguard is deactivated.
Electronic Anti-Theft System
The radio has a anti-theft protection, which operates in conjunction with the instrument cluster.
After disconnecting the radio power supply, the radio is ready for use again once the power supply is connected. The radio code does not need to be entered again. The requirement is that the first activation of the anti-theft system follows and that the radio is reconnected in the same vehicle.
Use the Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing and Information System (VAS 5051B) to get the radio code. The radio card and the label on the radio that were used in the past are no longer used.
• The Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing and Information System (VAS 5051B) must be online (connected to the network) in order to get the number code and the user must be authorized to access radio codes.
Electronic Anti-Theft System, Deactivating
Reactivating a locked radio is only possible by entering correct radio code number for anti-theft protection.
Determine the radio code using the Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing and Information System (VAS 5051B) :
- In Vehicle Diagnostic, Testing and Information System (VAS 5051B) , select operating mode "Guided Fault Finding".
- Using the Go To button, select "Functions/Component selection" and the following menu options in sequence:
• Body
• Electrical Equipment
• 01 - On Board Diagnostic (OBD) capable systems
• Sound System
• Sound System functions
• Radio code inquiry
An authorization to the system will be requested: Then the operating data, the VIN and the radio serial number will be automatically read out.
• Sometimes the Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing and Information System (VAS 5051B) cannot read the radio serial number when a new radio is installed. In this case, enter the serial number manually. The serial number can be found on a sticker on the radio and is also stamped into the side of the unit.
The radio code appears in the Vehicle Diagnosis, Testing and Information System (VAS 5051B) display.
Enter the radio code manually into the radio.
Electronic Anti-Theft System, Deactivating:
- Switch on the radio.
An entry mask appears.
- Enter the correct radio code using the key pad on the input mask.
- Confirm by pressing the input button.
The radio is enabled and is ready to be used.
• If the wrong code number was entered when overriding the anti-theft coding, first "SAFE" blinks in the display and "1000" appears again. You can now repeat the entire procedure one more time. The number of tries is shown in the display. If a wrong code number is entered again, the radio will lock up for approximately one hour. This lock is indicated by the word "SAFE" appearing continuously in the display. After one hour, then the procedure for deactivating the anti-theft system can be repeated. Keep in mind: Always two attempts, after that the radio will lock up for one hour.
