Automatic Transmission Fluid Level, Checking and Filling

If the Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) circuit was opened, it must first be bled. Refer to => [ Automatic Transmission Fluid, Bleeding ] Automatic Transmission Fluid, Bleeding.

Only then can the ATF level be checked and corrected.

The ATF is obtainable as a replacement part.

Container size 1.0 L - replacement part no. (G 055 025 A2)

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

• Drip Tray (V.A.G 1306)

• Torque Wrench (5-50 Nm) (V.A.G 1331)

• Torque Wrench (40-200 Nm) (V.A.G 1332)

• ATF Filler Tool (V.A.G 1924)

• Vehicle Diagnostic, Testing, and Information System (VAS 5051)

• Diagnostic Cable, 3 m with Voltage Supply (VAS 5051/1) or Diagnostic Cable, 5 m without Voltage Supply (VAS 5051/3)

Using (V.A.G 1924)

If an old (V.A.G 1924) is used, the width of the filling hooks must be decreased by about 20 mm. This is the only way possible to insert it into the ATF check hole. Deburr and clean the hook after cutting it.

Short Description

The ATF level is specified by a permanently installed overflow tube in the oil pan.

The ATF level is checked when fluid is a specific temperature and with the engine running. The ATF temperature is read out by the (VAS 5051). If the temperature has been reached, the plug in the oil pan is removed to check the ATF.

CAUTION!
An incorrect ATF level affects the function of the transmission.

Checking

Prerequisites

• Transmission not in emergency running mode, ATF temperature not above 30 °C (86 °F).

• Vehicle on a flat surface

• The selector lever is in the "P" position.

• All electrical components and the Air Conditioning (A/C) system must be turned off.

- Secure the container from (V.A.G 1924) to the vehicle.

- Connect the (VAS 5051) and move through the selections until it is ready for operation. Refer to => [ Tester, Connecting ] Scan Tool Testing and Procedures.

- Press the Guided Functions.

- Then select vehicle, transmission and ATF Level Check.

- Press ->.

- Press the brake pedal.

- Start the engine.

- Shift the selector lever into each position for at least 2 seconds. Then, place the selector lever in the "P" position.

- Raise the vehicle.

- Place the (V.A.G 1306) underneath the transmission.

At the Test Temperature of 35 °C (95 °F)

- Remove the inspection plug - arrow - from the oil pan to check the ATF.





• If the ATF level is too high, the excess ATF drains out.





- Allow the ATF to drain until it drips.





- Install the plug with a new seal and tighten it to 70 Nm.

• If the ATF level is too low, only the ATF in the filler hole drains out after the plug is removed.





- Wait approximately 30 seconds and if no more ATF drips out, top it off.

Allow the engine to continue running.

Filling

- Add ATF using (V.A.G 1924) until the ATF exits from the inspection hole.





Allow the ATF to drain until it drips.





- Install the plug with a new seal and tighten it to 70 Nm.

- The ATF check is now completed.

- Turn off the engine.
