One-Battery Layout with Auxiliary Battery and Two Battery Layout, Disconnecting and Connecting

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Torque Wrench (V.A.G 1331)


Risk of injury. Follow all Warnings and Safety Precautions. Refer to => [ Warnings and Safety Precautions ] Testing and Inspection.

A maintenance-free battery with charge indicator (visual indicator) is installed under the driver's seat. In addition, an Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM) sealed battery is located in the luggage compartment spare wheel well.

Disconnecting Sequence


Disconnecting and reconnecting batteries on a dual battery system MUST be performed using the following step-by-step procedure, in the sequence given. Failure to adhere to the following procedure will result in the deactivation of Main Battery Switch -E74- and subsequent damage to electrical system components.

- Disconnect battery under driver's seat.

- Disconnect battery in luggage compartment.

Battery under Left Front Seat, Disconnecting

To disconnect battery, anti-theft alarm system must be deactivated. Refer to => [ Anti-Theft Alarm System, Activating and Deactivating ] Anti-Theft Alarm System, Activating and Deactivating.

Always ensure the vehicle electrical system is protected by disconnecting the battery negative ( - ) terminal (interrupted current flow to ground) prior to servicing key areas of the electrical system as specified in this Repair Manual. Disconnecting the battery positive ( B+) terminal must only be performed as required to remove battery from vehicle, and must only be carried out after the negative ( - ) terminal is disconnected. Observe notes for connecting battery in any case.

- Turn off the ignition and all electric consumers and remove the key.



- Remove the left front seat, seat rail cover. Refer to => Body Interior 72 Removal and Installation.

- Remove the left front seat trim. Refer to => Body Interior 72 Removal and Installation.

- Remove bolts - arrows -.






- Tilt seat frame and seat to rear - arrow -.






- Remove screw - 1 - and remove air guide - 2 -.






- Open battery box clips - arrows - and remove cover.






- Disconnect negative ( - ) terminal - 1 - from battery.






- Disconnect positive ( B+ ) terminal - 2 - from battery.

Second Battery or Auxiliary Battery in Luggage Compartment, Disconnecting

- Lift and remove luggage compartment floor cover - arrow -.






- Open retaining clips - 1 - and remove nuts - 2 - on right side of battery cover.






- Open retaining clips - 1 - and remove nuts - 2 - on left side of battery cover.






- Remove retaining strap nuts - arrows -.






- Remove retaining straps.

- First, disconnect negative ( - ) terminal - arrow - from battery.






- Then disconnect positive ( B+ ) terminal - arrow - from battery.






Connecting Sequence


Disconnecting and reconnecting batteries on a dual battery system MUST be performed using the following step-by-step procedure, in the sequence given. Failure to adhere to the following procedure will result in the deactivation of Main Battery Switch -E74- and subsequent damage to electrical system components.

Do not put any grease on the battery terminals.

- Connect battery in luggage compartment.

- Connect battery under driver's seat.

Second Battery or Auxiliary Battery in Luggage Compartment, Connecting

- Install battery positive ( B+ ) terminal - arrow - on battery positive post.






- Tighten the battery positive terminal bolt to the specification shown in => [ Fastener Tighten Specifications, Battery ] Specifications.

- Only after the positive ( B+ ) terminal has been secured should the negative ( - ) terminal clamp - arrow - be installed.






- Tighten negative terminal clamp screw to the specification shown in => [ Fastener Tighten Specifications, Battery ] Specifications.

Battery under Left Front Seat, Connecting

- Connect the battery positive clamp - 2 - to the battery positive terminal.






- Tighten the battery positive terminal bolt to the specification shown in => [ Fastener Tighten Specifications, Battery ] Specifications.

- Only after the positive ( B+ ) terminal has been secured should the negative ( - ) terminal clamp - 1 - be installed.

- Tighten negative terminal clamp screw to the specification shown in => [ Fastener Tighten Specifications, Battery ] Specifications.

- Replace seat frame bolts - arrows - and tighten them to the specification shown in => [ Fastener Tighten Specifications, Battery ] Specifications.






- Install the left front seat seat rail cover. Refer to => Body Interior 72 Removal and Installation.

- Install the left front seat trim. Refer to => Body Interior 72 Removal and Installation.

- Perform work steps according to table, through 11.06 or from 12.06.
