Lower Oil Pan






Lower Oil Pan

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Engine Support Bridge (10 - 222A)

Bracket with Spindle and Hook (10 - 222A/10)

Adapter (10 - 222A/19)

Engine Sling (2024A) and Bracket (2024 A/1)

Engine/Transmission Jack (V.A.G 1383 A)

Engine Support (T10014)

Used Oil Collecting and Extracting Device (V.A.G 1782)

Engine Support Basic Set (T40091)

Engine Support Supplement Set (T40093)

Hand Drill with Plastic Brush Attachment

Sealant

Removing

- Remove the ribbed belt. Refer to => [ Ribbed Belt ] Ribbed Belt.

- Remove the ribbed belt tensioner.

- Remove the left coolant pipe. Refer to => [ Coolant Pipes Overview ] Description and Operation.

- Remove the air filter housing.

- Remove engine mount bracket to engine mount nut - arrow - on the left and right sides.





- Remove left front wheel housing liner.

- Remove the coolant line retaining clamp nuts and bolts - arrows -.





With the nuts and bolts removed, the coolant lines can be moved aside slightly to position the (10 - 222A/19) on the longitudinal members.

- Install the (10 - 222A) on the bolted fender flanges with the (T40091/3) and two spindles.





The spindles are positioned forward.

- Engage both spindles in both rear engine lifting eyes.

- Install additional parts of (10 - 222A) as shown in the illustration. Position (10 - 222A/19) on the notches in the longitudinal members.





- Slide the (T40091/2) with the (T40093/5) into both (T40093/4).

CAUTION!
Secure the (T40091/2) with pins and connector cotter pins (T40093/4).

- Install the (T10014) in the mounting hole for the belt tensioner.





- Remove the (2024 A) eyes.





- Install the bolt - 1 - in the center bore of the (2024 A) again and secure with a cotter pin.

- Engage the pins on the (2024 A) in the front spindle on the (10 - 222A).

- Install the (2024 A/1) on the left side of the (2024 A).

- Engage the (2024 A) in the right front engine lifting eye and on the (T10014).

CAUTION!
Lifting hooks and alignment pins on (2024 A) must be secured with securing pins - arrows -.

- Raise the engine until the engine mount brackets are above the threaded stud on the engine mount and tension all spindles evenly to achieve even weight distribution.

- Position the (V.A.G 1383 A) on the bottom of the subframe.





- Secure the subframe using (T10300).

- Remove the bolts - 4 - and carefully lower the subframe using (V.A.G 1383 A).





- Remove the engine carrier bolts - 3 - and place the engine carrier on the subframe.

Ignore - 1 and 2 -.

- Disconnect the connector from the oil level thermal sensor (G266) - item 1 -.





- Place the (V.A.G 1782) under the engine.

- Drain the engine oil.

- Remove the oil level thermal sensor.

- Remove the lower oil pan - arrow -.

- Rotate the upper oil pan 180° and remove it toward the front.

When removing the lower oil pan, keep in mind that there is still some oil in it.

Installing





Replace the seals.

CAUTION!
Wear safety glasses.

- Remove sealant residue on the upper and lower oil pans with a rotating plastic brush.

- Clean the sealing surfaces so they are completely free of any oil or grease.

- Cut the tube nozzle at the front mark (nozzle diameter approximately 1.5 mm).





- Apply a sealant bead - arrow - on the clean sealing surface of the lower oil pan as shown in the illustration.





Apply the sealant bead on the lower oil pan so it seals correctly with the tapered base on the upper oil pan.

Sealant bead thickness: 2 mm

The sealant bead must not be thicker than specified or sealant could enter the oil pan and clog the oil pump strainer.

The lower oil pan must be installed within 5 minutes after application of sealant.

- Set the lower oil pan in place and tighten all bolts in a diagonal sequence to 5 Nm.

- Tighten the bolts for the lower oil pan in a diagonal sequence.

- Install the oil level thermal sensor, refer to => [ Oil Level Thermal Sensor, Removing and installing ] Oil Pump and Lower Oil Pan Overview.

- Install the subframe.

If the subframe was not secured to the body, perform an alignment after installing.

- Install the air filter housing.

- Install the left coolant pipe. Refer to => [ Coolant Pipes Overview ] Description and Operation.

- Install the ribbed belt tensioner.

- Install the ribbed belt. Refer to => [ Ribbed Belt ] Ribbed Belt.

- Add engine oil and check the oil level. Refer to => [ Engine Oil Level, Checking ] Component Tests and General Diagnostics.
