Drive Belt Tensioner: Service and Repair
Ribbed Belt Tensioner
• Always use two brackets with spindles and hooks (10-222 A/10). Otherwise the engine support bridge (10-222 A) will have a tendency to tip.
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Engine Support Bridge (10-222 A)
• Engine Support Adapter (10-222 A/3) (Qty: 2)
• Bracket with Spindle and Hook (10-222 A/10) (Qty: 2)
• Shackle (10-222 A/12)
• Adapter (10-222 A/22)
• Lifting Eyebolt (3368) (For automatic transmission only)
Removing
- Remove the noise insulation.
- Remove the right front wheel housing liner.
- First, remove the bolt - 1 -, then bolts - 2 and 3 - and then remove the pendulum support.
Vehicles with All Wheel Drive (AWD):
- Remove the flexible disc heat shield bolts - arrows - and shield.
- Mark the position of the driveshaft flexible disc to the flange on bevel box.
- Remove the driveshaft flexible disc bolts - arrows - and remove it from the bevel box.
To loosen or tighten, counter hold the driveshaft on the back of the final drive.
Continuation for all Vehicles:
- Remove the after-run coolant pump bracket bolt - 2 -.
- Remove the engine cover. Refer to => [ Engine Cover ] Engine Cover.
- Remove the air filter housing. Refer to => [ Air Filter Housing ] Air Filter Housing.
Danger of causing damage to electrical components when disconnecting the battery.
• Complete the steps for disconnecting the battery.
- With the ignition turned off, disconnect the ground cable - arrow - from the battery.
- Remove the battery.
- Remove the battery tray bolts - arrows - and tray.
Vehicles with a Automatic Transmission:
- Install the lifting eyebolt (3368) to the transmission as shown.
- Install the engine support bridge (10-222 A) using the following special tools:
• Adapter (10-222 A/22) (Qty: 2)
• Engine support adapter (10-222 A/3) (Qty: 2)
• Bracket with spindle and hook (10-222 A/10) (Qty: 2)
• Shackle (10-222 A/12)
• Lifting eyebolt (3368)
Vehicles with a Manual Transmission:
- Remove the shift mechanism from the transmission.
- Install the engine support bridge (10-222 A) using the following special tools:
• Adapter (10-222 A/22) (Qty: 2)
• Engine support adapter (10-222 A/3) (Qty: 2)
• Bracket with spindle and hook (10-222 A/10) (Qty: 2)
• Shackle (10-222 A/12)
Continuation for all Vehicles:
- Support the engine with the spindle.
- Remove the engine mount to engine mount bracket bolts - arrows -.
- Lower the engine approximately 55 mm.
- Remove the ribbed belt. Refer to => [ Ribbed Belt ] Ribbed Belt.
- Free up the wiring harness - arrow -.
- Remove the bolt - 1 - and remove the belt tensioner from the accessory bracket.
Installing
• Tightening specifications, refer to => [ Ribbed Belt Overview ] Ribbed Belt Overview.
Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following:
- Insert the belt tensioner - 1 - into the accessory bracket - 3 - and tighten the bolt - 5 -.
• Note the support - 2 - installed location: insert the support in the hole on the accessory bracket.
• Note the centering sleeve - 4 -.
- Adjust the engine mount. Refer to => [ Engine and Transmission Mount, Adjusting ] Engine and Transmission Mount, Adjusting.
