Left Stub Shaft and Seal
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Slide Hammer-Complete Set (VW 771)
• Additional Part For VW 771 (VW 771/37)
• Torque Wrench (5-50 Nm) (V.A.G 1331)
• Counter Hold Tool (T10371)
• Thrust Piece (3305)
• Tensioning Strap (T10038)
• Sealing Grease for Seal (G 052 128 A1)
• Grease for Clutch Plate Splines (G 000 100)
Removing
- Lift the vehicle.
- Remove the noise insulation under the engine/transmission assembly.
- Remove the ball joint nuts - arrows - from the control arm.
- Remove the left drive axle from the transmission and secure it to the stabilizer bar - A -.
- Remove the circlip - arrow A - and the O-ring - arrow B - from the stub shaft.
- Counter hold the stub shaft using the counter hold tool (T10371) and remove the bolt - arrow -.
- Place a drip tray under the transmission.
- Remove the stub shaft.
- Remove the stub shaft using the slide hammer (VW 771) and additional part For VW 771 (VW 771/37).
Installing
- Lightly lubricate the outer circumference of the new seal and install it using thrust piece (3305).
- Fill half of the volume between the sealing and dust lips with sealing grease for seal (G 052 128 A1).
- Counter hold the stub shaft using the counter hold tool (T10371) and tighten the bolt - arrow - to specification, see - item 20 - in => [ Differential Overview ] Removal and Replacement.
- Then, install a new circlip - arrow A - and a new O-ring - arrow B -.
- Lubricate the stub shaft splines with grease for clutch plate splines (G 000 100).
- Install the left drive axle.
- Check the transmission fluid level. Refer to => [ Transmission Fluid Level, Checking ] Procedures.
- Install the noise insulation under the engine/transmission.
