Steering Gear Differences, Generation 1 and 2, Rabbit
As of start of production Golf from MY 2004 , steering gear (Generation 1) is installed. This was replaced in MY 2004 with steering gear (Generation 2).
Vehicles which have a Generation 1 steering gear can be changed over to a Generation 2 steering gear. Refer to => [ Steering Gear, Changing from Generation 1 to Generation 2 ] Steering Gear, Changing from Generation 1 to Generation 2.
You can identify the steering gear when it is installed by the number of bolts on the steering pinion bracket cover.
- Raise vehicle.
- Turn steering wheel to stop on both sides in succession while noting the number of bolts - 1 -.
Steering gear (Generation 1) has 4 bracket cover bolts, (Generation 2) has 2 bolts.
