For bonded rubber bushing replacement, a special work procedure is described for each side of the rear axle.

Since bonded rubber bushings are always replaced in pairs, both work procedures must be performed in succession.

- Insert brake pedal depressor (V.A.G 1869/2 ).

- Raise vehicle to installation height.

Removing

- Unclip right ABS-line at rear axle.

- Disconnect brake line - arrow A - and remove clip - 1 -.

- Pull brake hose out of rear axle.

- Remove parking brake cable out of holders - arrow B - and - arrow C -.

- Place engine/transmission jack (V.A.G 1383 A ) under right spring mount of rear axle.

- Gently lift right spring mount of rear axle using engine/transmission jack (V.A.G 1383 A), this allows the bolt - 2 - for mounting bracket at rear axle to be unscrewed.

Vehicles in which point of bolt - 2 - points toward vehicle exterior:

- Loosen bolt - 2 - and remove nut.

- Mark installation position of mounting bracket for rear axle and unscrew mounting bracket from chassis.

- Pull bolt - 2 - out of mounting bracket and screw mounting bracket to chassis again.

With Automatic Headlight Range Control

- Remove coupling rod of left rear level control system sensor (G76) from rear axle => [ Left Rear Level Control System Sensor Overview ] Left Rear Level Control System Sensor Overview.

Continuation for All

- Place engine/transmission jack (V.A.G 1383 A ) under left spring mount of rear axle.

- Press left spring mount using engine/transmission jack (V.A.G 1383 A) upward far enough so that bonded rubber bushing can be pulled out.

- Insert bolt - 1 - for mounting bracket at rear axle again and clamp a piece of wood with a height of a = approximately 80 mm between bolt and rear axle.

- Pull bonded rubber bushing out of rear axle using slide hammer-complete set (VW 771) - 2 - and thrust piece (3416/2) - 3 -.

Installing

Bonded rubber bushing is marked - 1 - on front side.

These marks must align with edge - arrow - of trailing link - 2 -.

- Insert bonded rubber bushing - 1 - into rear axle using thrust piece (3416/2) - 2 -.

Tab of bonded rubber bushing must settle in recess - arrow A - and point to edge - arrow B - of trailing link.

- Pull in bonded rubber bushing - 1 - into rear axle.

2. Thrust piece (3416/2)

3. Spindle from assembly device (3301)

4. Nut from assembly device (3301)

5. Thrust bearing from assembly device (3301)

6. Thrust piece (3416/1)

7. Thrust piece (3416/3)

- Before installing rear axle grease kidney-shaped recesses of bonded rubber bushing with assembly paste ( G052150A2).

If rear axle beam is inserted "when dry", noises may occur while driving.

Bolting of mounting bracket to rear axle must only be performed in a spring-contracted state.

Otherwise, the rubber bushing will be stressed resulting in a shortened service life.

CAUTION!
Do not lift or lower vehicle when the engine/transmission jack (V.A.G 1383 A) stands below the vehicle.

Do not leave engine/transmission jack (V.A.G 1383 A ) beneath the vehicle any longer than necessary.

- Tighten threaded connection of mounting bracket to rear axle to tightening specification.

- Replace clip - arrow C -.

Rest of installation is in reverse order of removal.

- Bleed brake system.
