Shift Cable: Service and Repair






Operating Cables Assembly Overview

Lubricate bearing areas and slide surfaces with grease (G 000 450 02).





1 Shift cable

Connect with cable retainer --> [ 11 Cable retainer ]

Installation position --> [ Shift Mechanism Installation Position ] Procedures

From 11.06 changed fastener on shift lever inside shift mechanism --> [ 8 Shift cable ] Shift Lever and Shift Housing from 10.06, Servicing

2 Selector cable

Connect with cable retainer --> [ 10 Cable retainer ]

Installation position --> [ Shift Mechanism Installation Position ] Procedures

From 11.06 changed fastener on selector bracket inside shift mechanism --> [ 6 Selector cable ] Shift Lever and Shift Housing from 10.06, Servicing

3 Lock washer

Always replace

Discontinued on shift mechanisms from 11.06 --> [ Shift Lever and Shift Housing from 10.06, Servicing ] Shift Lever and Shift Housing from 10.06, Servicing

4 Shift housing

5 Lock washer

Always replace

Do not damage cables when removing

6 Bolt, 20 Nm

Quantity: 3

For mounting bracket

7 Mounting bracket

Can be made of plastic or metal

8 Grommet

Mounting bracket to transmission

9 Spacer

10 Cable retainer

Adjust shift mechanism after installation --> [ Shift Mechanism, Adjusting ] Adjustments

For selector cable to relay lever

Do not interchange, cable locking mechanisms for selector cable on linkage lever and for shift cable on transmission shift lever are different

Is secured with a lock washer in the case of the metal relay lever --> [ 12 Lock washer ]

From 05.07 installed in conjunction with the plastic relay lever --> [ Plastic Relay Lever ] Plastic Relay Lever

Removing from plastic relay lever --> [ Plastic Relay Lever ] Plastic Relay Lever

Pressing onto plastic relay lever --> [ Plastic Relay Lever ] Plastic Relay Lever

Allocation --> [ Allocation of cable retainers ]

11 Cable retainer

Adjust shift mechanism after installation --> [ Shift Mechanism, Adjusting ] Adjustments

For shift cable to transmission shift lever

Do not interchange, cable locking mechanisms for selector cable on linkage lever and for shift cable on transmission shift lever are different

Allocation --> [ Allocation of cable retainers ]

12 Lock washer

Always replace

Not needed with plastic relay lever

13 Lock washer

Always replace

Not needed with plastic relay lever

14 Bushing

Not needed with plastic relay lever

15 Relay lever

Installation position --> [ Installation position of transmission shift lever/relay lever ]

Adjust shift mechanism after installation --> [ Shift Mechanism, Adjusting ] Adjustments

Can be made of plastic or metal

The metal relay lever is placed in the bushings --> [ 14 Bushing ] and secured with a lock washer --> [ (item 13) Lock washer ].

From 05.07 plastic relay lever

Plastic relay lever, removing and installing with cable retainer --> [ Plastic Relay Lever ] Plastic Relay Lever

The bushings and lock washers are not needed with plastic relay lever

16 Slide shoe

17 Transmission shift lever

With balance weight

Insert so that master spline aligns with shift rod

Installation position --> [ Installation position of transmission shift lever/relay lever ]

Adjust shift mechanism after installation --> [ Shift Mechanism, Adjusting ] Adjustments

From 06.06, smaller diameter on cable retainer mounting bolts --> [ From 06/06, smaller diameter of shift cable retainer mounting bolts ]

18 Self-locking nut, 23 Nm

Always replace

Allocation of cable retainers





The holes in the cable retainers have various diameters.

Installation position of transmission shift lever/relay lever

2 The relay lever engages into the guide rail of the transmission shift lever, via guide shoe - arrow -.
