Selector Shaft Seal
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Sleeve (VW 423)
• Pulling Hook (T20143/1)
• Sealing Grease for Seal (G 052 128 A1)
- Remove the air filter housing if it is located above the selector shaft. Refer to one of the following:
Diesel engines.
Gas engines.
With a Metal Relay Lever:
- Remove the clip - 2 - and the relay lever - 3 -.
• If the relay lever cannot be removed due to the transmission mount bracket, remove the selector cable from the relay lever. Remove the slide shoe from the transmission shift lever.
With a Plastic Relay Lever:
- Remove the relay lever with the cable retainer. Refer to => [ Plastic Relay Lever ] Description and Operation.
Continuation for all Shift Mechanisms:
- Remove the nut - 4 - and the transmission shift lever - 1 -.
- Pry out the seal using the pulling hook (T20143/1).
- Lightly coat the outer circumference of the new shaft seal with oil.
- Fill the area between the sealing and dust lips - arrow - halfway with sealing grease for seal (G 052 128 A1).
- Install the seal using the sleeve (VW 423).
Further installation in reverse order of removal.
- Install the transmission shift lever to the gear shift shaft => [ (Item 1) Self-Locking, Nut ] Shift Unit Overview and tighten the nut to specification.
• The transmission shift lever can be installed in only one position.
- Adjust the shift mechanism. Refer to => [ Shift Mechanism, Adjusting ] Adjustments.
- Install the air filter housing, if it was removed earlier. Refer to one of the following:
Diesel engines.
Gas engines.
