Removing
Follow all Safety Precautions when working on an airbag. Refer to => [ Airbag Safety Precautions ] Airbag Safety Precautions.
- Disconnect the battery.
- Remove side instrument panel cover on passenger side. Refer to => [ Instrument Panel Side Covers ] Instrument Panel Side Covers
- Remove center A-pillar trim on passenger side. Refer to => [ Center A-pillar Trim ] Center A-pillar Trim
- Remove passenger side A-pillar trim. Refer to => [ Lower A-Pillar Trim ] Lower A-Pillar Trim
- Remove center cover. Refer to => [ Center Cover ] Center Cover
- Remove the glove compartment. Refer to => [ Glove Compartment ] Glove Compartment
Electrostatic discharges can lead to an unintended deployment of the airbag. Therefore the technician must discharge static electricity from the body before separating the ignition and ground wiring. This is done for example, by briefly touching the body or the door striker pin.
- Disconnect wiring harness from front passenger side airbag.
- Remove the two bolts - 1 - and - 2 - (9 Nm).
- Remove passenger's airbag - 3 - down out of mounts.
- Brackets - 4 - and - 5 - are shown removed to provide a better overview.
Installation
- Install in reverse order of removal.
• If a passenger airbag housing consists of plastic, screws - 1 - and - 2 - (9 Nm) should be inserted with locking compound D 197 300 A1.
Check whether an additional ground cable must be routed in the vehicle:
If a passenger airbag is replaced, an additional ground cable must be routed in the vehicle in some cases.
• The example shows a single-stage airbag module. For dual-stage airbag modules, the evaluation as to whether an additional ground cable must be routed in the vehicle is done similarly.
- Check whether a ground cable is routed on the passenger airbag housing:
• With a passenger airbag with ground line - 1 -, the wiring harness - 2 - is a three-conductor harness, and in addition, another cable - 3 - is secured on the threaded pins - 4 -.
• With a passenger airbag without ground line - 5 -, the wiring harness - 6 - is a two-connector harness and no additional cable is secured on the threaded pins - 7 -.
On a passenger airbag without ground cable, route an additional ground cable in vehicle:
• For the following work, use a cable (cross section 1 mm, length 600 mm) from the Wiring Harness Repair Kit (VAS 1978) or Wiring Harness Repair Kit (VAS 1978A).
- Secure end of ground line with bolt - 1 - on right side of passenger airbag.
- Route ground line correctly to right side of passenger footwell.
• Lengthen the ground cable as needed with suitable instruments from the Wiring Harness Repair Kit (VAS 1978) or the Wiring Harness Repair Kit (VAS 1978A).
- Secure other end of ground cable to ground pin - 2 -.
- Turn on the ignition.
Make sure that no persons are in the vehicle.
- Connect the battery.
