Shift Cable: Service and Repair
Selector Lever Cable, through 02.2009
• After installation, the cable must be checked for ease of movement and must be adjusted.
Removing
- Place the selector lever in the "S" position.
- Disconnect the selector lever cable - 1 - from the cable mounting bracket - 2 - and remove it.
Handle with care and make sure not to kink cable. Do not use pliers, otherwise retainer straps on the cable mounting bracket may break off.
- Pry off the cable - 1 - from the lever - 3 - using an open end wrench - 2 -.
- Raise the vehicle.
To remove the cable and/or the selector mechanism, remove the heat shield and, if necessary, any components of the exhaust system.
- Remove the heat shield.
- Remove the selector housing nuts from below the selector lever.
- Remove the securing plate. Always replace the securing plate.
The shift housing is pushed forward on the cable.
The locking strap must be pushed forward in order to remove the cable - 1 -.
- Push the bolt upward at the same time with a screwdriver - 2 -.
- Insert the screwdriver from underneath while pushing the locking strap forward.

• - 1 - push the strap forward
• - 2 - push the bolt upward
- Remove the selector lever cable.
Remove the selector housing from the cable
Installing
Do not grease the cable.
- Route the selector lever cable free of tension, also insert it into the cable mounting bracket on the transmission but do not secure it yet.
- When installing, make sure the selector lever cable is routed correctly.
- Also clip the cable in the retainer. Make sure that bracket does not touch the transmission fluid cooler.
- Nuts - 8 Nm
- Mount the selector housing on the cable.
- Install the selector lever cable into the selector mechanism.
- Insert the cable into the bracket and then insert the bolt through the eye from the top
Install the securing plate only after having checked the cable for ease of movement. Refer to => [ Selector Lever Cable Checking, through 02.2009 ] Testing and Inspection.
- Secure the cable with a new securing plate to the cable mounting bracket on the selector mechanism.
- Install the selector housing, heat shield and exhaust system.
- Adjust the selector lever cable after installing. Refer to => [ Selector Lever Cable Checking, through 02.2009 ] Testing and Inspection.
