Camshaft Oil Seal: Service and Repair






Exhaust Camshaft Seal

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Seal puller - general usage (2085)

Adapter (2085/2)

Retainer (3036)

Assembly tool (T10071)

Torque wrench (40-200 Nm) (VAG 1332)

Puller (T40001) with claw (T40001/6) and claw (T40001/7)

Removing

- Remove the toothed belt, refer to one of the following:

=> [ Toothed Belt, without Divided Toothed Belt Guard ] Toothed Belt, without Divided Toothed Belt Guard.

=> [ Toothed Belt, with Divided Toothed Belt Guard ] Toothed Belt, with Divided Toothed Belt Guard.

- Loosen the camshaft gear. Use the (3036) to do so.





- Remove the camshaft gear using the (T40001), (T40001/6) and the (T40001/7).





- To guide the (2085), install the (2085/2) into the camshaft until seated.





- Loosen the inner portion of the (2085) two rotations (approximately 3 mm) from the outer portion and secure with the knurled bolt.

- Grease the threaded head of the (2085), position and screw into the oil seal as far as possible with forceful pressure.





- Loosen the knurled bolt and turn the inner part against the camshaft until the seal is removed.

Installing

- Do not oil the sealing lip of the seal.

- Before installing, remove any remaining oil from the camshaft journal with a clean cloth.

- Cover the groove on the camshaft end with adhesive tape.

- Slide the dry seal carefully onto the camshaft end.

- Place the (T10071/1) on the camshaft end.





- Slide the oil seal over the (T10071/1) onto the camshaft end.

- Remove the (T10071/1).

- Press in the seal until seated using the (T10071). To do so, use the (T10071/4).





- Install the camshaft gear.

Note the installed position: The thin rib on the camshaft gear points outward - arrows - and the TDC marking for cylinder 1 is visible.





- Insert the fitted key into the camshaft.

- To tighten the bolt, hold the camshaft gear in place using the (3036). Tightening specification, refer to => [ Valvetrain Assembly Overview ] Service and Repair.





When turning the camshaft, the pistons may not be at TDC for any cylinder. Valves/pistons may be damaged.

Be sure the fitted key is properly seated.

- Install the toothed belt, refer to one of the following:

=> [ Toothed Belt, without Divided Toothed Belt Guard ] Toothed Belt, without Divided Toothed Belt Guard.

=> [ Toothed Belt, with Divided Toothed Belt Guard ] Toothed Belt, with Divided Toothed Belt Guard.

- Install the ribbed belt. Refer to => [ Ribbed Belt ] Ribbed Belt.

The rest of the assembly is basically a reverse of the removal sequence.

- Fill the cooling system. Refer to => [ Draining and Filling ] Draining and Filling.
