Front Crankshaft Seal: Service and Repair

Seal, Belt Pulley Side

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

• Seal Remover (3203)

• Counter Support (3415)

• Assembly Tool (T10053)

• Torque Wrench (5-50 Nm) (V.A.G 1331)

• Torque Wrench (40-200 Nm) (V.A.G 1332)

Removing

- Remove the ribbed belt. Refer to => [ Ribbed Belt ] Ribbed Belt.

- Remove the toothed belt, refer to one of the following:

=> [ Toothed Belt, with Divided Toothed Belt Guard ] Toothed Belt, With Divided Toothed Belt Guard.

=> [ Toothed Belt, without Divided Toothed Belt Guard ] Toothed Belt, Without Divided Toothed Belt Guard.

- Remove the crankshaft toothed belt gear. To do this, secure the gear using (3415).





- To guide the (3203), thread the gear bolt into the crankshaft by hand until seated.





- Loosen the inner portion of the (3203) nine turns (approximately 20 mm) from the outer portion and secure it using knurled screw.

- Grease the threaded head of the (3203), position and forcefully screw it as far as possible into the oil seal.





- Loosen the knurled screw and turn the inner portion of the (3203) against the crankshaft until the seal is pulled out.

Installing

- Before installing, remove any oil remaining on the end of the crankshaft with a clean cloth.

- Install the (T10053/1) on crankshaft.





- Slide the dry oil seal over the (T10053/1) and onto the crankshaft.

- Press in the oil seal using (T10053) and (T10053/2) (M16 x 1.5 x 60 bolt) until seated.





• Contact surface between the crankshaft toothed belt gear, diamond disc and crankshaft must be free of oil.

• Crankshaft toothed belt gear bolt must be replaced.

• The threads and shoulder must be free of oil and grease.

- Position the toothed belt gear - 2 - with diamond disc - 3 - to the crankshaft and tighten the bolt - 1 - hand tight.





- Secure the crankshaft toothed belt gear using (3415).





- Tighten the new toothed belt gear bolt to 90 Nm + an additional 90° (1/4) turn, the additional turn may occur in several stages.

The rest of the installation is basically a reverse of the removal sequence.

Install the toothed belt and adjust the valve timing, refer to one of the following:

=> [ Toothed Belt, without Divided Toothed Belt Guard ] Toothed Belt, Without Divided Toothed Belt Guard.
