Camshaft Oil Seal: Service and Repair






Exhaust Camshaft Seal

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Seal Puller - General Usage (2085)

Adapter (2085/2)

Retainer (3036)

Assembly Tool (T10071)

Puller (T40001) with Claw (T40001/6) and Thrust Piece (T40001/7)

Torque Wrench (40-200 Nm) (V.A.G 1332)

Thrust Piece (T10353)

Removing

- Remove the toothed belt, refer to one of the following:

=> [ Toothed Belt, with Divided Toothed Belt Guard ] Toothed Belt, With Divided Toothed Belt Guard.

=> [ Toothed Belt, without Divided Toothed Belt Guard ] Toothed Belt, Without Divided Toothed Belt Guard.

- Loosen the camshaft sprocket bolt and remove it approximately 10 mm (use the (3036) to counter hold it).





- Remove camshaft sprocket using (T40001), (T40001/6) and (T40001/7). The (T40001 ) supports itself on the bolt - arrow -.





- Remove the camshaft sprocket bolt.

- To guide the seal puller, install (2085/2) into camshaft by hand until seated.





- Remove the inner portion of (2085) two rotations (approximately 3 mm) from the outer portion and secure it with the knurled crew.

- Grease the threaded head of (2085), position and forcefully screw it as far as possible into the oil seal.





- Loosen the knurled screw and turn the inner part against the camshaft until the seal is removed.

Installing

- Before installing, remove any remaining oil from the camshaft with a clean cloth.

- Cover the groove on the cone of the camshaft with standard adhesive tape.

- Carefully slide the dry seal onto the camshaft pins.

- Press the seal on until seated using (T10071), (T10353) and a washer - arrow -. To do so, use (T10071/4).





The (T10353) is needed to compensate for the length of the (T10071/4). Washers can also be used.

- Install the woodruff key into the camshaft.

- Install the camshaft sprocket. To tighten the bolt, hold the camshaft sprocket in place using (3036). Tightening specification, refer to => [ Valvetrain Overview ] Service and Repair.





When turning the camshaft, the pistons may not be at TDC for any cylinder. Valves/pistons may be damaged.

Be sure the woodruff key is properly seated.

- Install the toothed belt, refer to one of the following:

=> [ Toothed Belt, with Divided Toothed Belt Guard ] Toothed Belt, With Divided Toothed Belt Guard.

=> [ Toothed Belt, without Divided Toothed Belt Guard ] Toothed Belt, Without Divided Toothed Belt Guard.

- Install the ribbed belt. Refer to => [ Ribbed Belt ] Ribbed Belt.

The rest of the installation is basically a reverse of the removal sequence.

Fill the cooling system. Refer to => [ Draining and Filling ] Procedures.
