Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Removing
The steering column is only available as a complete unit, without steering lock housing, as a replacement part.
It is not possible to service the steering column.
Steering lock housing can be modified.
Steering lock housing, removing and installing => [ Steering Lock Housing ] Steering Lock Housing.
CAUTION!
Before performing work on the electrical system and removing the steering wheel, the following conditions must be met:
• Remove battery ground (GND) cable.
• Wheels must be located in straight ahead position.
If these procedures are not observed, the airbag system may not function properly during vehicle operation!
- Put wheels in straight-ahead position.
- Remove cover in footwell.
- Remove steering wheel.
Remove Trim for Steering Column Switch
- Remove bolts - 1 -.
- Remove grip for height and length adjustment - 5 -.
- Remove bolts - 2 -, - 3 - and - 4 -.
- Remove lower part of trim for steering column switch.
- Remove upper section of trim - 1 - for steering column switch.
After performing assembly work on steering column switch, Basic Setting of steering angle sensor (G85) must be checked.
- Remove steering angle sensor (G85). Remove bolt for steering column switch - arrow - and remove steering column switch.
In vehicles with automatic transmission, locking cable for ignition key removal lock must also be disengaged => [ Ignition Key Removal Lock Cable, Disengaging and Engaging ] Service and Repair.
- Remove plastic cover - 1 - over shear bolts.
- Remove cable tie.
- Remove bolts - 1 -.
- Remove cover - A -.
- Remove bolt - 1 - from universal joint.
- Remove universal joint from steering gear.
Securing Steering Column before Removing
An assembly safety guard is required to stop the upper and lower sections of steering column pulling apart when detaching steering gear.
CAUTION!
If upper and lower part of steering column are pulled apart too far or are pushed inside each other the splines is separated.
This may lead to rattling noises during subsequent operation if the mesh section is not in its original installation position.
- Push or pull the steering column together or apart until the hole becomes visible.
- For example, insert a clip into hole - arrow -.
Vehicles with Nacam Steering Column through 01.00
- Remove nut - 3 -.
- Pull out bolt - 1 -.
- Remove bolts - 2 - and remove steering column.

Vehicles with Presta Steering Column from 02.00
- Remove nut - 3 -.
- Pull out bolt - 1 -.
- Remove bolts - 2 - and remove steering column.

Installing
Vehicles with Nacam Steering Column through 01.00
New steering columns shipped as replacement part are secured with transport lock - 6 -.
This transport lock - 6 - must be removed after installing steering column in vehicle.
For new steering columns supplied as replacement part, shear bolt - 10 - and roller - 11 - must be installed.
- Tighten shear bolt - 10 - until heads break off.
- Place steering column with pre-assembled steering lock housing on cross member.
- Install bolts - 5 -.
- Insert bolt - 12 -.
- Install on nut - 13 - and tighten.
- Tighten bolts - 5 -.
- Remove transport lock - 6 -.
- Connect universal joint shaft to steering pinion.
- Tighten bolt - 8 -.

Vehicles with Presta Steering Column from 02.00
New steering columns shipped as replacement part are secured with transport lock - 6 -.

In vehicles with automatic transmission, locking cable for ignition key removal lock must also be engaged => [ Engaging ] Service and Repair.
- Install steering column switches.
- Install steering angle sensor (G85).
Basic Setting of the Steering Angle Sensor Must be Checked After the Following Repair Work
• If the steering angle sensor (G85) was removed or replaced,
• After removing or replacing steering column;
• After removing or replacing steering column switch;
• After removing or replacing steering lock housing;
• If steering wheel was offset.
Check basic setting of steering angle sensor (G85 )
- Connect vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system ( VAS 5051A) => [ VAS 5501, Connecting and Selecting Functions ] Scan Tool Testing and Procedures.
- Select "Suspension (Rep. - Gr. 01; 40 to 49)" on display.
- Select "Brake system" on display.
- Select "01-On Board Diagnostic (OBD) capable system..." indicated on display.
- Select "Anti-lock Brake System (ABS)..." indicated on display.
- Select "Functions" on display.
- Select "Steering Angle Sensor -G85-" on display.
- Install steering column switch trim.
- Install steering wheel.
- Install airbag unit.
CAUTION!
Make sure that no person remains in the vehicle while the battery is reconnected!
