Safety Precautions And Notes When Working On Airbags

CAUTION:
- Checking, removing, installing and servicing may ONLY be performed by qualified personnel.
- Battery Ground (GND) strap must be disconnected before performing any work on the airbag system. No waiting time is required after disconnecting the battery. When connecting airbag system to a voltage source, no one should be in the vehicle interior.
- Before handling (touching) the airbag unit, the technician must be electrostatically discharged. This is accomplished by touching grounded metal like, for example, coolant pipes, heating system pipes or metal frame.
- Always install airbag units in the vehicle, as soon as they are removed from the packaging.
- If installation work is interrupted, immediately return the airbag unit to its original packaging.
- NEVER leave an airbag unit unattended.
- In removed condition, ALWAYS lay the airbag down with impact absorbing pad facing up.
- DO NOT install airbag units that have fallen onto a hard surface, or which have signs of damage.
- Belt tensioner storage and transportation are covered under explosive substance laws.
- Make sure no one is in the vehicle when working on airbag system, especially if airbag system is connected to power source or battery is reconnected.
- Never lay aside airbag unit onto workbench or any other surface with side down that faces passenger compartment. If airbag unit is activated, it may ignite and thus cause severe injuries. Side of airbag facing passenger compartment must always point upward.
- Airbag units that were not installed or not installed completely must be stored in airbag transportation container. Noticeably mark outer side of container so that other persons are aware of airbag still being able to deploy.
- It is not permitted to use commercially available seat covers. Only seat covers approved for use with airbags may be used.
- Only use original equipment seat covers approved for use with side airbags (identified by label on fabric). Cover seam must run straight in area of side airbag.
- When installing backrest cover make sure all cover clips must be removed.
- Only use original equipment cover clips.
- If cover is damaged (rips or burn holes, etc.) in area of side airbag, always replace the cover for safety reasons.

Disposing airbag units
- Airbag units that have not ignited must be returned in original transportation container for proper recycling/disposal in accordance with national legislation! Please direct questions to the manufacturer.
- Airbag units that have ignited can be disposed of with industrial waste.
