Electrical testing

TESTING WITH TEST BOX VAG 1598 AND ADAPTER

For testing, use Fluke 83 multimeter (US 1119 or equivalent) and US 1115 LED tester.
Specified values given are valid for ambient temperatures from 0 to 40°C (32 to 104°F).
If measured values vary from specified values, check wires to the component using wiring diagram.
If measured values vary only slightly from specified values, clean Scan Tool (ST) terminals and connectors and test leads, then repeat test. Before replacing components, check wiring and connections, especially when specified values are under 10 ohms.

CAUTION: Switch multimeter to the appropriate measuring range before connecting the test leads to avoid damaging the electronic components.

To connect the testers to the VAG 1598 Test Box, use adapter leads from VW 1594.
The terminal numbers of the connectors match the terminal numbers of the VAG 1598 Test Box.

REQUIREMENTS

- Battery Positive Voltage (B+) OK.
- Fuse 18 (S18) OK.
- Ground (GND) connections on engine and transmission OK (location of engine Ground connection: below lower part of intake manifold).
- Fuel Pump (G6) and Fuel Pump Relay (J17) OK.

- Disconnect connector 1 from Motronic Engine Control Module 2 (J220) with ignition off (location of control module: in right plenum).
- Connect VAG 1598/18 to Motronic Engine Control Module harness connector.
- Perform test according to the table.

CAUTION: Switch multimeter to the appropriate measuring range before connecting the test leads to avoid damaging the electronic components.

NOTE: After electrical testing on vehicles with automatic transmission, the DTC "Engine/Trans. Electrical Connection disconnected" stored by the test must be erased.

SYSTEM ELECTRICAL TEST CHARTS (ECM PINOUT)

1)Refer to notes above
2)If a sensor DTC is displayed during the OBD program, but it is not confirmed by testing, it can be attributed to an intermittent temperature signal. If this case, also check Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor
3)1993 m.y. only. with separate two-terminal Data Link Connectors
