Power Steering Pump: Service and Repair

NOTE:
- Always replace seals.
- Do not reuse hydraulic oil that has been drained.
- Directly below the component legend are the Fig. numbers. Please refer to these for information regarding removal and installation instructions.






1- Sealing ring

2- Pressure line

3- Banjo bolt
- Tighten to: 30 Nm (22 ft. lb.)

4- Suction hose

5- Hose clamp

6- Power steering pump
- Manufacturer: ZF, Saginaw
- Modification: pumps from Toyoda have also been installed and use the same removing and installing procedure
- Only ZF pumps are supplied as replacement parts
- Delivery pressure for all pumps is the same
- Fill with oil before installing
- Illustrations shows a Toyoda pump

7- Socket-head bolt
- Tighten to: 25 Nm (18 ft. lb.)
- Counter hold using water pump wrench VAG 1590 when loosening and tightening

8- V-belt
- Checking condition

9- Hex bolts
- M8 x 32: 25 Nm (18 ft. lb.)
- M8 x 28 for Toyoda pump -6-: 20 Nm (15 ft. lb.)

10- Bolt
- Tighten to: 45 Nm (33 ft. lb.)
- M10x98

11- Pivot bracket
- Must be installed free of tension
- Modification:
Pivot bracket changed with introduction of the Toyoda power steering pump refer to Fig. 1

12- Mounting bracket
- Must be installed free of tension

13- Bolt
- Tighten to: 25 Nm (18 ft. lb.)
- M8 x 50

14- Bolt
- Tighten to: 25 Nm (18 ft. lb.)
- M8 x 85

15- Adjustment bolt
- Tighten to: 25 Nm (18 ft. lb.)

16- Hex nut
- Tighten to: 25 Nm (18 ft. lb.)
- Not for Diesel engine

17- Bolt
- Tighten to: 25 Nm (18 ft. lb.)
- M8 x 42

18- 25 Nm (18 ft. lb.)

19- Stud
- Tighten to: 25 Nm (18 ft. lb.)
- Not for Diesel engine

20- Hex nut
- Tighten to: 25 Nm (18 ft. lb.)

21- Bracket

22- Coolant pump





Fig. 1 Revised pivot bracket
- The revised pivot bracket, unlike the previous bracket, is equipped with two cut-outs (arrows).
- Only the revised pivot bracket is supplied as a replacement part. It can also be used with ZF and Saginaw power steering pumps.

INSTALLATION

NOTE:
- Seating surfaces and threads must be free of paint on both sides of the vane pump.
- Numbers enclosed by dashes in the steps below relate only to the illustrations below.





1. Secure vane pump -1- with bolts -3- in pivot bracket -2-.
2. Install bolts -4- and tighten.
3. Install belt pulley -6- on vane pump -1- and tighten to:

-3- Hex bolt, 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.)
-4- Hex bolt, 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.)
-5- Socket-head bolt, 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.)





4. Mount pivot bracket -2- and pump -1- with bolts -3- to mounting -4-.
5. Screw bolt -3- into pivot bracket -2- 10 mm until threaded bush contacts to mounting -4- (do not tighten).
6. Install hex bolt -5-, (do not tighten).





7. Fit mount -4- together with pump and pivot bracket to bracket -5- and engine block.
8. First screw bolts -1-, -2- and -3- in a couple of turns and then tighten in sequence as numbered to: 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.)
9. Install adjustment bracket -7- to engine block using hex bolts -6-.
10. Install adjustment bolt -8- to pivot bracket.
11. Tighten hex bolts -6- to: 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.).
12. Install V-belt and adjust tension.

NOTE: Stud -9- used only on vehicles with gasoline engine.
