Clockspring Assembly / Spiral Cable: Service and Repair

SRS Clockspring/Spiral Cable Removal and Installation

Component Overview:

REMOVAL
1. Disable airbag system, refer to Air Bags and Seat Belts/Air Bags (Supplemental Restraint Systems)/Service and Repair

2. Position front wheels straight ahead.
3. Using a T30 Torx wrench, remove steering wheel pad attaching screws.
4. Pull steering pad rearward, then disconnect airbag electrical connector.
5. Place installation alignment marks on steering wheel and main shaft.
6. Remove steering wheel.
7. Remove spiral cable from combination switch.

Wiring Cover Harness Pt 1:

(a) Remove two screws from wire harness

Wiring Cover Harness Pt 2:

(b) Remove wire harness cover
8. Remove spiral cable

Clock Spring/Spiral Cable:

(a) Remove four srews
(b) Disconnect the connector and remove the sprial cable

INSTALLATION


NOTE:
- The main point of installation is the adjustment of the spiral cable.

1. Ensure front wheel are positioned straight forward.

Clock Spring/Spiral Cable Adjustment Pt 1:

2. Turn spiral cable counter by hand in counterclockwise direction until cable becomes difficult to turn.

Clock Spring/Spiral Cable Adjustment Pt 2:

3. Rotate spiral cable about 3 turns to align the red mark.
(a) The spiral cable will rotate about 3 turns to either left or right of center.
(b) The connector should be straight up

4. Align steering wheel and main shaft mate marks, then install steering wheel attaching nut. Torque nut to 26 ft. lbs. on MR2 and Previa models and 25 ft. lbs on Camry, Celica and Supra.
5. Connect airbag electrical connector.
6. Install steering wheel pad, torque attaching Torx screws to 65 inch lbs.
7. Ensure steering wheel center point, then install battery ground cable.
