P0617

2AZ-FE ENGINE CONTROL SYSTEM: SFI SYSTEM: P0617: Starter Relay Circuit High

DTC P0617 - Starter Relay Circuit High

MONITOR DESCRIPTION

While the engine is being cranked, the battery voltage is applied to terminal STA of the ECM. If the ECM detects the Starter Control (STA) signal while the vehicle is being driven, it determines that there is a malfunction in the STA circuit. The ECM then illuminates the MIL and sets the DTC.
This monitor runs when the vehicle is driven at 20 km/h (12.4 mph) for over 20 seconds.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE
HINT:
- The following troubleshooting flowchart is based on the premise that the engine is cranked normally.
If the engine will not crank, proceed to the problem symptoms table Symptom Related Diagnostic Procedures.
- Read freeze frame data using the Techstream. Freeze frame data records the engine condition when malfunctions are detected. When troubleshooting, freeze frame data can help determine if the vehicle was moving or stationary, if the engine was warmed up or not, if the air-fuel ratio was lean or rich, and other data from the time the malfunction occurred.

PROCEDURE

1. READ VALUE USING TECHSTREAM (STARTER SIGNAL)
(a) Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
(b) Turn the ignition switch to ON.
(c) Turn the Techstream ON.
(d) Select the following menu items: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / All Data / Starter Signal.
(e) Check the value displayed on the Techstream when the ignition switch is turned to the ON and START positions.
OK:

NG -- READ VALUE USING TECHSTREAM (STARTER SIGNAL)
OK -- CHECK FOR INTERMITTENT PROBLEMS
2. READ VALUE USING TECHSTREAM (STARTER SIGNAL)

(a) Disconnect the clutch start switch or the Park/Neutral Position (PNP) switch connector.
(b) Connect the Techstream to the DLC3.
(c) Turn the ignition switch to ON.
(d) Turn the Techstream ON.
(e) Select the following menu items: Powertrain / Engine and ECT / Data List / All Data / Starter Signal.
(f) Check the value displayed on the Techstream when the ignition switch is turned to ON.

Result

(g) Reconnect the clutch start switch or the Park/Neutral Position (PNP) switch connector.
C -- INSPECT PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH
B -- INSPECT CLUTCH START SWITCH
A -- Continue to next step.
3. INSPECT ECM (STA TERMINAL VOLTAGE)

(a) Disconnect the clutch start switch or the Park/Neutral Position (PNP) switch connector.
(b) Disconnect the ECM connector.
(c) Turn the ignition switch to ON.
(d) Measure the voltage according to the value(s) in the table below.
Standard voltage:

(e) Reconnect the clutch start switch or the Park/Neutral Position (PNP) switch connector.
(f) Reconnect the ECM connector.
B -- REPLACE ECM
A -- REPAIR OR REPLACE HARNESS OR CONNECTOR (ECM - ST RELAY - CLUTCH START SWITCH OR PNP SWITCH)
4. INSPECT CLUTCH START SWITCH

(a) Disconnect the clutch start switch connector.
(b) Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.
Standard resistance:

Result

(c) Reconnect the clutch start switch connector.
B -- INSPECT IGNITION SWITCH
A -- Continue to next step.
5. REPLACE CLUTCH START SWITCH
(a) Replace the clutch start switch Removal.
NEXT -- Continue to next step.
6. INSPECT IGNITION SWITCH

(a) Remove the ignition switch.
(b) Measure the resistance according to the value(s) in the table below.
Standard resistance:

(c) Reinstall the ignition switch.
NG -- REPLACE IGNITION SWITCH
OK -- Continue to next step.
7. INSPECT ECM (NSW TERMINAL VOLTAGE)

(a) Disconnect the clutch start switch connector.
(b) Disconnect the ECM connector.
