Steering Column Replacement

Removal Procedure


Important: Before installation work affecting the airbag, follow the safety instructions for pyrotechnic systems.


1. Lock steering

1. Turn the steering wheel into the straight-ahead position.
2. Pull out the ignition.
3. Allow the steering lock to engage.





2. Remove the footwell trim on the driver side. Remove the 2 clips.

Important: Note the installation position of the clamp bolts.


3. Remove the 2 clamp bolts (1, 2).
4. Compress the intermediate shaft slightly and remove.
Caution: Refer to Battery Disconnect Caution (Battery Disconnect Caution) .

Important: Wait 1 minute for the capacitor to discharge.


5. Disconnect the ground cable from battery.

Important: The airbag module must not be forced open and must always be laid with the cushion side facing upwards.


6. Remove the airbag module.




7. Separate the wiring harness plug (1) for the horn.
8. Remove the steering wheel from steering the column assembly.

* Remove the bolt (2).
* Remove the steering wheel form the steering shaft.

9. Remove the upper steering column trim.

* Remove the 2 bolts.
* Release 2 from the instrument.

10. Remove the lower steering column trim.
Remove the 3 bolts.
11. Remove the column integration module (CIM) module.

* Disconnect the wiring harness plug.
* Remove the 3 bolts.






Important: To release the light switch, press in the rotary knob (1) in position 0, move the pressed in knob to the center position (3), light switch unit (2) is released.


12. Release the light switch.
13. Remove the light switch.




14. Disconnect the wiring harness plug for the light switch.

1. Disconnect the wiring harness plug.
2. Press down on the secondary fuse (2).
3. Remove the fuse (1).

15. Remove the lower instrument panel padding trim.
Remove the 4 bolts.
16. Remove the wiring harness from the steering column assembly.

* Remove the bolt.
* Release the wiring harness from the holder.


Important: Note the installation position of the locking pin on top of the steering column.


17. Remove the steering column assembly from the steering crossmember.
Remove the 3 bolts.
18. Remove the steering/ignition lock from the steering column assembly.

1. Turn the ignition lot to the Park position.
2. Remove the bolt.
3. Remove the retaining clip.




Installation Procedure

1. Install the steering/ignition lock to the steering column assembly.

1. Install the retaining clip.
2. Install the bolt.


Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice (Fastener Notice) .


Important: The locking pin must sit correctly in the instrument panel (I/P) tie bar.


2. Install the steering column assembly to the I/P tie bar.
Insert the steering column assembly.

Tighten the 3 bolts to 30 N.m (22 lb ft).

3. Install the wiring harness to the steering column assembly.
Install the wiring harness into the holder.

Tighten the bolt to 2.5 N.m (22 lb in).


Important:
* Disregard for vehicles with Open and Start.

* Vehicles with Open and Start: Disconnect the battery. Switch the ignition on and off. Open and close the driver door. The steering lock and the ignition lock engage automatically.



4. Lock the steering

1. Turn the steering wheel into the straight-ahead position.
2. Pull out the ignition key.
3. Allow the steering lock to engage.

5. Install the lower instrument panel padding trim.

Tighten the 4 bolts to 2.5 N.m (22 lb in).

6. Connect the wiring harness plug for the light switch unit.
7. Install the light switch.





Important: Turn the rotary switch (1) to position 0, the light switch lock (2) projects.


8. Release the light switch.
9. Install the column integration module (CIM) module.
Connect the wiring harness plug.

Tighten the 3 bolts to 3.5 N.m (32 lb in).

10. Install the lower steering column trim.

Tighten the 3 bolts to 1 N.m (9 lb in).

11. Install the upper steering column trim.
Install 2 on the instrument.

Tighten the 2 bolts to 1 N.m (9 lb in).






Important:
* The airbag contact unit must not be twisted.

* During removal and installation, make sure that the markings (arrows) are in the positions illustrated.



12. Insert the steering wheel in the CIM.
The guide pin (1) on the back of the steering wheel must engage in the carrier (2) of the CIM.




13. Guide the airbag (1) wiring harness through the opening in the steering wheel hub.

Important:
* Ensure that the marks (2) on the steering wheel shaft align.

* Clean thread and fit new bolt with locking compound.



14. Install the steering wheel to the steering shaft.
Place the steering wheel on the steering column assembly.

Tighten the bolt to 30 N.m (22 lb ft).

15. Connect the wiring harness plug for the horn/infotainment.
16. Install the airbag module.





Important: Before inserting the clamp bolt, make certain that the steering shaft groove (arrow) is flush with the bore in the intermediate shaft. Clean the thread and insert the bolt with locking compound. Note installation position of clamp bolt.


17. Install the intermediate shaft to the steering shaft .

1. Slide the intermediate shaft onto the steering shaft.
2. Install the clamp bolt (1).

Tighten to 24 N.m (18 lb ft)



Important:
* Ensure that the wheels are in the straight-ahead position.

* Before inserting the clamp bolt, make certain that the steering gear shaft groove (arrow) is flush with the bore in the intermediate shaft. Clean the thread and insert the bolt with locking compound.



18. Attach intermediate shaft to steering gear.

1. Slide the intermediate shaft onto the steering gear.
2. Install the clamp bolt (2).

Tighten to 24 N.m (18 lb ft)


19. Install the footwell trim.
Install the 2 clips.
20. Check the straight-ahead position, adjust if necessary.
21. Connect the ground cable to the battery.
