Adjusting the Fuel Gauge/Sensor

Adjusting The Fuel Gauge/sensor

There are two different ways of adjusting the sensor/gauge, depending on the fault symptoms: whether the reading error is "equally large" from full tank to empty tank or whether the reading error occurs only at a certain level. Adjustment of the fuel level sensor offset or, alternatively, the fuel gauge reading, is possible.

Alternative 1. Gauge reading error across the whole scale.
1. Drain the fuel tank.
- The Read Value should be 0 litres.
2. Turn the ignition switch to OFF.
3. Add 10 litres of fuel to the tank.
4. Turn the ignition switch to ON.
5. Read value Tank Contents. Adjust Tank offset to the correct value.
6. Activate the fuel gauge and check that the gauge reading is correct at all the "breakpoints". Adjust the breakpoints if necessary.
7. Clear the diagnostic trouble codes in all systems.
- Perform a functional test.
Test OK?
YES The steps taken to rectify the fault were correct.

Alternative 2. Reading error at a certain level.
1. Activate the fuel gauge and check that the gauge reading is correct at all the "breakpoints". Adjust the breakpoints if necessary.
2. Clear the diagnostic trouble codes in all Systems.
- Perform a functional test.
Test OK?
YES The steps taken to rectify the fault were correct.

Adjusting The Fuel Gauge

Adjustment of the fuel gauge must be carried out in several steps. There are 7 different commands for this in Tech 2:
1. Tank offset - Adjustment of sensor. This command adjusts the sensor itself (tank sensor input to main instrument unit) and lifts/lowers the entire scale (works setting 2 litres).
2. Tank Empty - Breakpoint for empty tank (works setting 0 litres).
3. Tank Reserve - Breakpoint when the fuel reserve lamp lights up (works setting 10 litres).
4. Tank 1/4 - Breakpoint for 1/4 tank level (works setting 19 litres).
5. Tank 1/2 - Breakpoint for 1/2 tank level (works setting 38 litres).
6. Tank 3/4 - Breakpoint for 3/4 tank level (works setting 58 litres).
7. Tank Night Panel (works setting 15 litres).
