DESCRIPTION OF OPERATION
Current is supplied from battery 1 to Maxi fuse 2 and ignition switch 20 via Maxi fuse 3.
Current is also supplied direct to terminal 30 on starter motor 4.
When the ignition switch is turned to the Start position, starter relay 517 begins to operate, closing the circuit to the starter motor solenoid, terminal 50.
When current is supplied to both terminals, the starter motor begins to rotate.
Automatic Transmission
Cars with automatic transmission are equipped with starting interlock contacts 77 which prevent the engine from being started when the selector lever is in position 1, 2, 3, D or R.
Anti-Theft Alarm
On cars with an anti-theft alarm, current is supplied from the ignition switch via the anti-theft alarm control module to prevent the car being started when the alarm is activated.
Sensonic
On cars equipped with the Sensonic automatic clutch system, current (+50 circuit) is supplied via control module 509 to the coil of starting relay 517 if the conditions for starting are satisfied.
FAULT DIAGNOSIS HINTS
1. Inspect Maxi fuses 2 and 3 and check whether they are supplied with current.
2. Check that relay holder terminal 30 is supplied with current when the ignition switch is in the Start position.
3. Check starting interlock contacts 77 on cars with automatic transmission or check the Sensonic system.
4. Check that the starter motor is grounded to the car's chassis.
5. Check connectors, wiring harnesses and ground connections.
