Propeller Shaft Replacement (w/o RPO ZOK)

Removal Procedure

1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle (Service and Repair).
2. Remove the rear tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation (Service and Repair).
3. Remove the rear stabilizer shaft link from the lower control arm. Refer to Stabilizer Shaft Link Replacement (Rear Suspension).
4. Remove the muffler and exhaust pipe from the vehicle. Refer to Exhaust Muffler Replacement (LNF) (Service and Repair)Exhaust Muffler Replacement (LE5) (Service and Repair).
5. Remove the floor panel tunnel panel front closeout panel. Refer to Floor Panel Tunnel Panel Replacement - Front (Automatic Transmission) (Floor Panel Tunnel Panel Replacement - Front (Automatic Transmission))Floor Panel Tunnel Panel Replacement - Front (Manual Transmission) (Floor Panel Tunnel Panel Replacement - Front (Manual Transmission)).
6. Remove the floor panel tunnel rear panel. Refer to Floor Panel Tunnel Panel Replacement - Rear (Floor Panel Tunnel Panel Replacement - Rear).

7. Support the transmission with a suitable jack stand.
8. DO NOT loosen the bolts (1) for the driveline support.
9. Remove the transmission close out panel. Refer to Transmission Support Replacement (Automatic Transmission) (Transmission Support Replacement (Automatic Transmission))Transmission Support Replacement (Manual Transmission) (Transmission Support Replacement (Manual Transmission))Transmission Support Replacement (Manual Transmission W/ZOK) (Service and Repair).

10. Remove the front propeller shaft bolts (1) and washer support tabs (2) from the transmission.

Note: The proper nuts and bolts to be removed are those where the nut is the closest or facing the rear differential drive flange. DO NOT remove the nuts and bolt where the nuts are facing the front or propeller shaft.

11. Remove the propeller shaft nuts and bolts from the rear differential.

12. Support the rear differential with a transmission jack stand.

13. Remove the left (1) and right (2) rear differential mount bolts.

Note: DO NOT re-use the bolts, discard and use NEW only.

14. Remove the four differential carrier bracket bolts (1).

Note: DO NOT lower the rear differential more that 11 inches. Lowering the rear differential more than 11 inches will over extend the wheel drive shafts.

15. Lower the rear differential to clear the rear crossmember.

Note: Use caution when removing the propeller shaft so as not to damage the seal on the end of the propeller shaft. This seal is NOT serviced. If the seal is damaged, replace the propeller shaft as an assembly.

16. Remove the propeller shaft from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure

1. Clean the bolt holes in the differential carrier with brake cleaner or other suitable solvents to remove any adhesive.

2. Position the propeller shaft between the transmission and rear differential.

Note: Finger tighten the front and rear propeller shaft nuts and bolts only.

3. Install the propeller shaft bolts (1) and washer support tabs (2) in the transmission drive flange.

4. Clean the pilot shaft (1) and the pilot hole (2) of any dirt or debris.
5. Apply a small amount of chassis lube on the pilot shaft (1). Refer to Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers ([1][2]Drive/Propeller Shaft).
6. While lifting the rear differential in place, align the pilot shaft (1) and the pilot hole (2).

Note: Hand start the rear differential mounting bolt.

7. Install the left (1) and right (2) rear differential mounting bolts and tighten to 175 Nm (129 lb ft).

8. Apply GM threadlocker to the NEW differential carrier bracket bolts (1). Refer to Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers ([1][2]Drive/Propeller Shaft).

Note: Use only hands tools to tighten the bolts.

9. Install the four new driveline support bracket bolts (1) and tighten to 80 Nm (59 lb ft).

10. Tighten the front propeller shaft bolts in sequence (1-6) to 40 Nm (30 lb ft). Tighten the front propeller shaft bolts in.

11. Install the propeller shaft nuts and bolts to the differential drive flange and tighten to 85 Nm (63 lb ft).
12. Remove the jack stand from the rear differential.

13. Remove the transmission jack stand.
14. Install the transmission close out panel. Refer to Transmission Support Replacement (Automatic Transmission) (Transmission Support Replacement (Automatic Transmission))Transmission Support Replacement (Manual Transmission) (Transmission Support Replacement (Manual Transmission))Transmission Support Replacement (Manual Transmission W/ZOK) (Service and Repair).
15. Install the floor panel tunnel panel front closeout panel. Refer to Floor Panel Tunnel Panel Replacement - Front (Automatic Transmission) (Floor Panel Tunnel Panel Replacement - Front (Automatic Transmission))Floor Panel Tunnel Panel Replacement - Front (Manual Transmission) (Floor Panel Tunnel Panel Replacement - Front (Manual Transmission)).
16. Install the floor panel tunnel rear panel. Refer to Floor Panel Tunnel Panel Replacement - Rear (Floor Panel Tunnel Panel Replacement - Rear).
17. Install the muffler and exhaust pipe from the vehicle. Refer to Exhaust Muffler Replacement (LNF) (Service and Repair)Exhaust Muffler Replacement (LE5) (Service and Repair).
18. Install the rear stabilizer shaft link to the lower control arm. Refer to Stabilizer Shaft Link Replacement (Rear Suspension).
19. Install the rear tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation (Service and Repair).
